Article: Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love

Wow i never knew the was a pay per view ad system, Adblock turned off for myBB and myG!

I'd be interested to know what advertising configuration that this site uses, as I'm sure others would. I think MyBB does it's own marketing rather than use syndicates if the banners are anything to by.

I block any add's that I find intrusive during my browsing experience ...

If I have to look at an add for 5seconds before the page loads, I kill it if I can, and make a npote to use that site as little as I possibly can ...

If you push your advertising aggressively and get blocked, you have only yourself too blame ...

i think the reason some people are 'ad-blocking' on myBB, is that myBB is suppose to be a site to fight agaist monopolies of companies like Telkom, or bad service of companies like Sentech, IBurst etc. but these days the site is full of add's from them :wtf:
If you dont like the ads then fine, block away if you're doing so on moral grounds, but the forum has evolved since the days of only fighting the good fight and now incorporates much more than that. We now have news, galleries, blogs, reviews, etc - all hosted locally and I'm guessing that it doesn't come cheap.

BTW - the metamorphosis started long before your arrival so your excuse for ad blocking is pretty thin.

No you don't understand, even if it was blocked, I couldn't give a *****. I'm just not going to mess around with settings to purposefully block anything on this site ;)

thats just selfish, its so easy, just click the arrow next to the sign and click "disable on mybroadband.co.za"

I don't adblock on MBB, simply because the site deserves support and the ads here aren't intrusive to me

wow, that's a hectic article, but i must admit that i agree in principle. i'll disable adblock on mybb for now. because i believe a good free service should receive some reciprocal gesture on my part. it's like donating to wikipedia or contributing source to an oss project.

the problem is, as per the article, that if a model isn't sustainable, it needs to be changed. you just can't rely on good will in this day and age. perhaps ppc is better than traditional banner stuff. but if ppc isn't controllable enough, how about developing mybb into more of a tech research hub for marketers?

http://www.justplay.co.za/ is one possible model - you take a survey, get exposure to a product and can win a gadget. the marketer learns more about his audience and gets opt-in comms if the user permits it. there's a couple of ways to get trends with the voluntary buy-in of users. look at how popular polls are... there must be a practical way of gathering valuable data which can be productised and monetised. consensually of course.

The problem is a lot of local website owners/designers do not understand how to tastefully place ads. Take webmail.co.za & iol.co.za for example.

As long as data stays expensive compared to other countries, I'll be forced to block on downloading any extra wasted data. Sorry MyBB.
