Hi Guys

Went to apply for an ADSL line today

We live in a complex, no one here has a phone line as yet. The lady at Telkom Shop checked the system and apparently there are underground lines so they would be able to install the line

They way they explained the costing to me was very confusing. First of all the once off fee for install is R400 and something odd rand. Then apparently i need to pay a fee of R131 a month for analogue line rental?

I need 4mb ADSL, I'm assuming i will have to pay the ISP (i want to use MWEB) for ADSL line rental and data R899 a month

Why the R131 per month for Telkom also?.....i thought this amount is included for Mweb when paying for their package deal ie. they take care of line rental costs

Or am i confused?

The R131 is the rental of the voice line which is compulsory currently.
To have ADSL you need:
voice line rental
Adsl rental
ISP
I suggest that you keep the adsl line rental with telkom. You might save a few bucks a month but when you want to move to another ISP, you will need to move your line back to telkom which I hear can be a real nightmare.
I have the same setup
Telkom line rental : R131
ADSL rental : R413
Mweb uncapped 4meg : R528
this is what the monthly amounts will be. There will be once-off voice line charges and also adsl charges

naa R131 is normal telephone line rental ,for normal phone calls, everyone in country pays that with adsl :)

making your cost R1030 a month, if you don't make phone calls.

Agreed...

Just get the 4meg ADSL service with Telkom as well as the line rental and go to another ISP like MWEB for the Uncapped account..

You can get the installation done for free if you use the Closer 1 package, which will cost you R150 instead of the normal R131's line rental.
I'm not sure if that will make the ADSL installation for free as well though, because I did the ADSL installation myself, which is quite easy to be honest.

1) is the physical copper line from your home to the exchange.
2) is the voice port on the PSTN equipment

Thanks for the response guys, just wanted to make sure i was not paying unnessary extras

@staunchy - where would i find this out? only once they have installed the line?

As far as i know, there is a promotion on with Telkom, for new line installations for free. It's NOT a closer package, but part of their plan to boost connections. Just check with Telkom if the special is still active. Otherwise go for the Closer 1 option and then add ADSL when you apply. Free connection. but slightly more per month. Also, don't ask for ADSL installation. The will rob you another R500 just to connect it! You can do it yourself.

It's called the Telkom Simple, but it is a 2 year contract and its only a 384kbps line with like 10GB local cap (of which the first 1GB may be international). So I would strongly advise against this option.

You can cancel the Telkom Closer 1 package like after the first month, which means that you'll get the ADSL/telephone installation done for like R19 :p

And then if you do this they hit you with penalties. Happened to me and took ages to sort out because the damn system indicated that I cancelled my service before the contract expiery date which wasn't actually the case. I went from the DO1 package to the DO3 package. So a simple upgrade almost cost me R 1 500 because of neglagence from the Telkom staff member on the other side of the line.

The other side of the line is where the problem lies. I prefer the other side of the counter (@Telkomshop), when it gets technical like this.

there are plans to end this double charging ideology with regards to the two rentals, but i'm starting to feel the world may end first.
also be sure to speak to the bodycorp of your complex too, some have weird policies when Telkom's involved

Uhm, you can cancel the Telkom Closer 1 package easily, because it's on a month to month basis, unlike the Do Broadband / Telkom Simple packages which bind you to a 2 year contract!
I'm actually going to keep my Telkom Closer 1 option, because I'm making use of it for after hour / weekend calls to my parents/family.

Not Telkom Simple. It's something else. It's not advertised, casue it's not a promotion as such. Basically, Telkom is trying to boost lines, so for a certain period, they offer free installation. This might be for previous clients, i am not 100% sure.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought you could get "Free installation" if you choose the Self-Install Option? (SIO)

If your Telkom line is installed (hopefully free) and your ADSL line is approved and activated, then yes.

The part where you verify the ADSL and enter your details on a router is what you save on (R491.00).

Ooh I get it. Wow they charge you R491 for configuration? :O
