hello,

i was looking at the astraweb unsenet pricing:

1443ck0.jpg

i have some questions, first of all:

1.the first option that says 1Mb/s rate limit, are they saying that you are limited to 1000kB/s? or like a 1Mb/s account?

2.how many people are using this on uncapped mweb? how does it go for you guys?
3. If you are, what plans you on?

4.Would you recommend any other services instead?

thanks for the help guys!

thanks, i get confused between the units of measurment,

am i right to say that i was downloading at 350kB/s? or 350kb/s? or 350kbit/s?

I'd go for the lowest speed option because currently M-Web does shaping by giving a speed limit per connection on all "heavy usage" services. I have a 4mbps connection but my connection to hotfile, oron and p2p is limited to 40kb/s. So if I download from hotfile and oron the downloads run at 20kb/s each. Add p2p to the mix and they also have to share the 40kb/s bandwidth.

In other words, Astraweb will be severely limited on M-Web anyway so you can take the lowest option.

doesnt astraweb do ssl?

i hear people always saying they get full speed 24/7 with them, something must be wrong here :|

You must be joking me? You'll seriously need to start doing some research on your own some time.

SSL Enabled - Free SSL on all accounts

You might get better speeds if you use like port 80 or 443, but MWeb will most certainly cancel your service indefinitely once you try to bypass their shaping that way!

I have used Astrawebs and they are good but at this present time I am using Newsdemon instead for a couple of reasons. The first is the Price is $11.95 which you get unlimited downloads at full speed(there is no speed limit) and you get 50 connections where as with Astraweb you only get 20.

With Newsdemon you also get both United States and Europe servers and you get SSL and 650 days retention. With Newsdemon you also get more ports 119,443,8080 and then the secure ports are 563,80 and 81.

You dont get that many ports on astraweb and with Newsdemon you get port 80 which the ISP's dont shape because it is TCP.

So For an extra $1.95 you getting full speed downloads,30 more connections and ports that your ISP dont shape and after your first month you get a extra 2 weeks for free :)

If you interested click here
,that is my referral link,it gets a month free if you join through it. In all I am really happy with Newsdeamon and have really downloaded a lot this month with it(yes this is my first month with them)

The one nice thing about astraweb is they have 100days more retention but it has not been a problem as most news servers only have 500 days so most stuff is re-uploaded if its 500 days odd old.

Hope I helped :)

I have been using Astraweb since November last year. great speeds, 20 connections are more than enough for a 4mbps connection (will get full line speed). yes Mweb shapes it, but not all the time, still got everything i wanted last month :-)

Im also using the $11 special that warwickw links to.

The more connections you have the more ports you can split your downloads with,so you can have connections with 119,443,8080,563,80 and 81 in all 7 connections with each.

This allows you to get full speed most of the time, however 20 connections is fine if you dont mind playing around, changing port numbers and seeing what they shape and what they dont. Also dont forget ISP's shape the actually servers, so you can split both ports and servers (UE and US).

As I said they both good,U have used both and to me newsdemon atm is awesome and that extra port is not shaped :P thats the main reason I swapped over tbh.

Please show us your download logs compared to last month when you were with Astraweb. Would like to see how much more you're getting down.

I took the 180Gb about 6 months ago, still have not used it all up. Used to get full speed during the evenings on uncapped 384. Got 5Mbps now so switched to 100Gb Afrihost capped - full speed all the time.

Ports: 119, 23, 1818 or 8080

SSL Ports: Ports: 443 or 563

How is using a standard port provided by a service deemed trying to bypass shaping?

this is *** advice...for 1$ more you can have full speed...R8....really...
i average 15 GB on the "heavily" shaped mweb... :)...that's per day...

I have an mweb uncapped 512k account and have been using Astraweb way before I made the transfer from Wireless internet to ADSL. Anyway, since the move to mweb uncapped adsl 512k, I am unable to use astraweb, my speeds start off at 50kb/s then jumps down to like 16kb/s and less.

I have used downstorm and the FDM to download the items I want. I have also tested the above on another user's internet account (they currently running uncapped 4mb line from mweb. With FDM I get 430kb/s but with Astraweb, I get max 200kb/s

Can anyone advise with my 512k line how I can use my astraweb account with grabit.

Thanks
