Astronomy/Space What-If

Probably - Google is the best search engine in the universe. Also, it would help if you had an AMEX card. Accepted everywhere in the universe except on Earth...

EDIT: I see someone changed the tags... I'm not crazy - I'm eccentric!

Lol @ smokey

Some of you are assuming way too much. It would be almost impossible to find our way back. 50 light years away means there are billions of stars and planets and a whole lot of galaxies in between.

We can't really use any of our knowledge to fathom what Extraterrestrial civilization will be able to do.

Assuming the Extraterrestrial civilization have mastered wormhole technology, they could read the wormholes signature and just reverse it.

Presto and you back to Earth!

Question is, would you really want to come back?

Another question: Was time dilated when you traveled?

It would be cool if thousands of years passed while you traveled, and people on Earth find you via technological development :)

I sometimes wonder if the aliens are in fact just humans from the future, coming back for whatever reason? What if they lived on Earth before and left. Then after thousands of years they decide to come back and guess what they find? Us.

Fortunately our ancestors were very direct with mentioning they were not human. ;)

That is such a... urgh... boring explanation. No fun, no adventure - sheesh. Never, ever write a sci-fi novel. Please.

That would be an epic disappointment of note.

No time dilation, we are speaking strictly SG1 type travel here :)

You would definitely be stuck there. There is no way you can pinpoint the Sol system and describe to them where Earth is located. There are billions of galaxies out there and without the aliens having a common point of reference there is simply no way to find your way back home.

Constellations would be a total waste of time, since they only appear like that from the perspective from the Sol system. From other galaxies they won't even be visible.

To give you guys an idea of the distribution of galaxies see here. Each dot there is a galaxy, not a star, each containing billions of stars, each star system possibly containing planets... that should give an idea.

Is that an image of the cosmic microwave background radiation?

The original link is on my home PC. If I remember correctly it's a redshift survey of the galaxies (not background radiation).
