right, so mate has one of these...

This thing has a ATI mobility 5870 and his idle temp is 75 degrees

His fan must be on auto, coz there is NO WHERE you can set it. The CCC version doesnt allow you to use overdrive so you cant change the fan speed even, it sucks!

Sure the problem is that the fan is running too slow. Its goes up to 85-95 when gaming and then it goes up to 100% but often it overheats and simply shuts down.

So we installed MSI Afterburn/Rivatuner etc etc but none of them pick up the fan controller, it sucks!

Any idea how we can get around this?

googled it and it would appear to be a widespread issue....

Make sure that its fan and heatsink are clean. If it still runs hot, then I would suggest that you get a cooling pad for the laptop.
My brother got a cheap USB cooling pad for his laptop and it made a massive difference.

dude it WORKED!!! Hardly any dust came out and his load temps are down to 70!!

Had the same deal with my setup. Temps clocking out at 91'C at load running Skyrim on high at 1920x1080. I was pissed to say the least. Compressed air to all 4 vents produced 55-60'C at load (with Skyrim). MASSIVE difference.
Thank god for a simple solution that worked so effectively!

Awesome, wonder what it could have been? Small amount of dust restricting the fans? Bad fan design?
