Has anyone ordered one of these recently? Where did you order it from?

Local retailers are quoting R22,000 for this laptop.

Where can I order it online? Provantage ?

Xoticpc has a huge order backlog on this model until June, and they only accept bank wire/money order. No SA credit cards.

They've been on rectron's pricelist for a while but listed as coming soon.

I used Provantage in Jan and was a bit disgusted. On Tues I pick up the G51JX from capemail and was very impressed with xotic pc. Gentech seem to be similiar to xotic pc and offer the same modifications and thermal pastes so check them out.

How about PortableOne.com ?

What was wrong with the Provantage order?

They have stock arriving this week, whereas XoticPC you have to wait till June.

Well a couple of things ...

1) I pre-ordered a laptop and when it came in stock, they decided that it would be better off to ship to people making current orders over mine after I had been waiting a month. IOW you can not trust that they will ship your item as sson as it comes in stock.. On an extra note, the guys at Xotic PC have excellent reviews on thier site and youtube vids and they offer customizations like RAM upgrades, HDD upgrades and thermal past for your lappie that makes them run a lot cooler. The i7 runs hot and model I have now purchased has thermal past that is said by many to make xpu and gpu to run at least 15 decrees cooler which is a lot over the period I expect to have my laptop for.

The G73 is in the same rabge as my lappie (the G51 JX) the ROG gaming laptops come with awesome RAM to to compliment the I7 cpu and a mouse that they can keep but one of the best laptop backpacks out there.I have noticed that provantage sell software at excellent rates and I may use them in the faaar future if I ever need them :P

Not to mentions Xotic PC have a huge stock of the G51 and if u can downgrade the card (or are willing to) you can get another awesome laptop sooner + thermal paste + and upgrade on RAM for possibly the same price and smaller laptop too so more portable. :)

Your ASUS G51JX does not have any BSOD problems with GTA IV?

The G73JH is $100 more than the G51 on XoticPC, I don't mind spending an extra $100.

Wantitall has this G51 for less than R13k but with i5 , is it worth it?

Yes if it is for gaming it def should be. I needed a better processor as I use my laptop for development and plan on doing some heavy load stuff involving virtual operating systems and of course the adobe products I use.

The i5 is virtual 4 cores while i7 is real 4 core but with 2 threads per core so if you have x amount of programs running at same time and they are busy executing 8 threads the i5 aint gonna cut it for me. Once again I needed mine customized to ensure it lasts especially aiding in the cooling of the system.

Do you get a free targus backpack too? What about 2 year warranty? The G73 is overkill for me because I doubt anyone needs 8GB ram although if you are gonna max it out you could
go with 2 solid state hrd drive but its gonna $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ hurt.
exotic pc shipping is costly too with usps but I am very happy with them. Here is nice email i got after asking them to resend email requesting email for invoice for SA customs. Note how friendly they are even a month after having paid and the deal being done. The after sales service is really good and if you deal with them they have a live chat that i think is active between around 4pm and 11 pm local time.

I only dealt with a sales rep that I found through notebook reviews.com and his name is Justin W if you request him and I think he likes the odd joke or two. He can also be found on notebook reviews .com giving latest news on newest laptops.

As a matter of interest, would import tax on an order like this be in the region of 16% on top of the order value? My understanding is that electronics do not carry a customs duty, so the rule of thumb is about 16% tax on the order. Is my understanding correct?

I bought my G73JH from Rectron at the beginning of the year. I did the whole import excersize. It wasn't worth it in the end.

That said, I still love my machine. It has no real battery life to speak of, but other than that its amazing.
I got the ROG mouse, a really kickass ROG backpack, In addition I also got the Steelseries ROG branded headset with detached mike.

My machine did develop some funny spots on the screen a few weeks ago, not quite dead pixels kinda like dirt or something between the Led's and Lcd.
Anyway I popped into Asus sandton and they changed my screen under warranty while I waited.

So +1 for the laptop and +100 for the service on the laptop.

The nVidia runs a lot cooler than the 5870, which might not be a huge train smash but the nVidia model comes with USB 3 which helps, especially with a laptop that does not have e-sata.

How much did it cost you altogether?

I think bringing it in would have come to about R22000 with all the additional charges. (keep in mind that because its a gaming laptop Sars taxes it differently to normal ones) I paid about 18500 ex vat, comes to about R21000. I also bought it thru the company so I got to claim the vat, where I would not have been able to (easily) do this if I had brought it in.

I've had my G73 for four months now. The only problem I have with this machine is the fact that I'm not physically able to have sex with it :D

Just on a sidenote: The Asus support shop in Sandton is absolutely brilliant. They replaced a dead keyboard on my machine in less than 15mins (was caused by spilt drink).

Well I ordered this machine in the beginning of the year for a client and he payed R21000 for it, and he couldint be more pleased with it.

I'm gonna reiterate... Why spend R21000 or even R16000 on something you can get for R12000 from overseas (ebay), which is 100% legally and 100% safe. Plus Asus has international warranty so you don't even have to worry about that.
