Hello guys. Guys in the HP Proliant microserver thread say that support for ATI graphics is k@k and gonna be tricky to get it to work? I got a Proliant micro server as a gift and a new Asus graphics card installed for me to support HD video via HDMI to my TV.

I did some reading...and found a article that say Ubuntu (and I assume Mint) should detect the card and install proprietary driver automatically...if not then there is a opersource one it will default to but not all features will be available.

Is it really that complicated? Should I be worried? I will be starting to install Linux Mint (Or Ubuntu ... still deciding) later this week or weekend. Should I be scared? Never had a ATI graphics. Always Intel onboard or Nvidia.
 
Nothing to be scared of, you cannot break the server.

Once you have it installed, give us a shout and well guide you through getting the graphics to work properly. It will only take about 10 minutes at most, depending on the speed of your internet.

EDIT:
What they are probably referring to is gaming on Radeon card in Linux, and yes, Nvidia still reigns supreme on that front. But it is not all THAT bad.

If the ATI graphics card is brand new maybe you can swap it for an Nvidia one?

I doubt it will give problems with HD movies, even so, if you find it a hassle later on, even if it is not new, you can probably swap it with some for a Nvidia card on Carbonite forums?

Lots of options, but install Linux first and let us see how it handles your needs.
 
I am currently using an AMD HD5xxx series card with Ubuntu 13.04 - downloaded & installed drivers from AMD website - only had one issue: When accessing 'AMD Catalyst Control Center (Administrative)', it would not accept my password. Had to install gksu (sudo apt-get install gksu) & it has worked perfectly thus far...

EDIT: If all you want is HD video playback, the 'Gallium' kernel drivers included with Ubuntu 13.04 should be sufficient - proprietary AMD drivers are only needed for gaming. If you are using a different distro, you may have to install a newer kernel with Gallium3D support. I had no problems playing HD content with an AMD HD4xxx series card with Ubuntu 12.10 - more details here: http://ubuntulife.co.za/forums/showthread.php?tid=30

Thank you guys. Much appreciated. It will only be used for watching HD movies on my HD TV and browsing the net on there also. :-)

Thanks to you guys I feel a bit more at ease. Even though I have been using Linux for many years now, I am not one of those guys that likes to fiddle and tweak to much. I am most happy when little windows pop up for me asking me to accect the drivers to install and offering to make me coffee while I wait and perhaps play some elevator music. :D
 
Should work fine until AMD drops support for it. Not to long ago they dropped support for the 4xxx series cards which came out in 2008! nVidia supports their cards a good couple of years longer.

But the driver will remain in the Ubuntu repo's? Or does that get removed also when AMD drops support?
 
Linux Mint currently running it on a HD4870. Even Fedora works with no problems.

EDIT: Try searching for ATI Legacy drivers. It's in a separate branch and should work.

Problems arise when new Xorg changes are no longer compatible with the drivers. Honestly don't worry about it, might not happen for a very long time.
 
In a terminal, use "alsamixer" and make sure all your relevant channels are unmuted.

Also, is sound enabled in the BIOS of the server?

Not.sure what to do in the alsamixer screen? When i.do.tjat.code it.comes up witj a.long list. One says audio device: advanced micro devices nee ati cedar hdmi adio,[radeon hd 5400/6300 series] ??? Is that right?
 
O do not see a option in the catalyst comtrol.centre to.enable.secomd.display? Should.i try and go back.to the open source driver maybe?

In AMD Catalyst Control Center (Administrative), click 'Display Manager' in the left pane, then select 'Multi-Display' tab on the right. You can select available options from the drop-down menu(if you already have more than one vdu connected).

I have already gone back.to open source driver. Did not solve tje problem. Will have to install catalyst again tomorrow. I only have one display though? Will it enable me to.select second display even though only one is connected? I am so.confused. :-( i.will try this tomorrow. Heading out.for dinner and movie now. Sorry about bad typing.
