Asus Rog Ally

From people I know's experience with Asus Laptop I'd only go for this product with the 3 year warranty.

Like who the **** has 16k just laying around to buy a handheld monster gaming rig!!

You rich folk O_O !
Was a downgrade for me, I wasn't using my PC to its full potential so sold it on + my loadshedding luck had me offline whenever I got home from work lol

Sorry, I don't know much about you. Do you live in South Africa? If so where did you get it from? Secondly, I am not sure what you do for a living but how many screens does it support and is it true Win11 that is running with it?

I am very interested in getting a steam deck at one point but availability and questions on what it can and can't do doesn't really get answered. I figured since you have one, Would you be able to do stuff on it like run Unity? Or run something like Blender? I personally use blender for my day-to-day and was just wondering if it is something you might work with.

Lastly, is the Type C a Thunderbolt 4? I only ask because I can see myself plugging it into an external GPU if it was possible.

It looks really nice I hope you enjoy it. :)

R16k is not a lot of money considering what it is. It is factually a computer that can replace an actual desktop. That alone makes it worth it especially if you consider a gaming laptop is like R21k and up

Not sure if incredible is, as a few who have bought it say it may be a grey import

With an ICASA sticker?

Incredible sells Asus laptops, also grey imports?

Also doesn't ASUS usually honour international warranties on portable computers?

Buy from the za.asus.com link then. But it seems to be out of stock there. Still how good is DG at providing that warranty? Calling them was a disaster. They responded to the email though.

The device has a proprietary port for external GPU. Those are only made by Asus and primarily for their thin Asus Flow laptops. So you need to import an ASUS gpu which costs about $1.5 for the last gen 3080 model and $2.5 for the 4090 model, before shipping and tax. The Ally has a wide port and included in that port is the USB Type C port. I don't think it will allow you to plug in any other device.

There have been a few reports of micro sd cards failing in ROG Ally units. Some people claim it may be an overheating issue, as some have experienced this while running games on the 35W Turbo setting. I see that the temps can easily go over 85 degrees on this setting, while the endurance of many SD cards tops at 85 degrees Celsius.

Yeah I had it hit 90 degrees on Friday night and it blue screened and restarted. But for that game I now just play it at 720p which still looks good on the screen and temps stay at 60.
I don't have an sd card though

Haven't had a blue screen yet. For now 15W mode which keeps the thing at 59 degrees C seems to be good enough.

Okay tried Toonstruck on it from GoG yeah adventure games don't work. Neither does hard west 2, but Tyrian 2000 actually works really well :).

Old game, have to crank it down to slow or slower as normal is a tad fastIMG_20230626_163202.jpg

Some games don't work with the controller and insist on the keyboard.

My switch accumulated a good amount of dust since I got a steam deck. Was looking at upgrading to the Rog. However, another handheld caught my attention. The GPD WIN 4. I've always found the steam deck a tad too big compared to the switch. GPD WIN 4 looks promising.

Looks interesting but their website descriptions suck

It's a nice device. It has 0.3 Tera Flops performance advantage over the Ally but costs $100 more and will not be sold locally which means self importation, duties and VAT.

Ally 8.6 Tera Flops
GPD Win 4 8.9 Tera Flops

The Ally CPU is the same one with the AI sub component disabled. AMD say they have tweaked the Z1 Extreme for handhelds.

The other advantage is that it can take more RAM and a standard external GPU unlike the Ally which only takes the Asus one.

Still the Ally performance is good enough for me and I'm a casual. :)

I'm not sure, that website shows 2 cpus and different ram configs
