Hi guys,

I am getting a new mobo, and was looking at the ASUS Striker II (nForce 780i) chipset. Does anybody have any good/bad experiences with the board, or at least the chipset? How is the stability, drivers, overclocking and so on?

Thanks in advance for any replies...

Michael

You'll be very sorry if you buy this board. It's not because Asus made a necessarily bad board (yes the XFX and EVGA are better boards and cheaper) but more that the 780i chipset is in simple terminology.... absolute pants!

If you must run SLI go for it, if you must run 45nm and SLi you may have to take anger management classes...

I've been using the Striker II now for 3 weeks - works damn well :)

until you try a 45nm CPU in it and attempt a little overclocking, then it all falls apart

aha, ok, well its a good thing I decided 2 ask then... also lucky that suppliers took their time on getting me a credit for my old board, and also lack of stock of the striker II...

I do want to run a 45nm in the future, and was considering SLI, but I think that in light of the above, I will rather go for the ASUS Maximus Formula. It is quite a bit cheaper, and shouldnt have any trouble with running 45nm quads...

Well any case, any advice on the Maximus?

thanks for the advice guys...

No no, Maximus is jumping from grill to microwave...
Ask QX6700 about his Maximus formula and you'll have all the info you need.
Latest ROG line is no good.
P5E3 board is still king

DDR3 ram is too expensive and the drawback that it only has 2xpcie and not 3 like the Striker II. The Intel Platform is great but considering the over-inflated costs for the ram and then to smack only two ATI's onto the board in crossfire... naaah Prefer the Striker II by far with all 3 my 8800's. I'm not really one for overclocking, so there it don't matter one bit.

1. Triple SLi is only for Vista
2. Triple SLi only for 8800Ultra
3. Striker II costs far more than any other board I know of
4. You can get a DDR2 equivelant
5. X38 is faster than 780i
6. 780i runs very, very hot
7. 780i doesn't really support 45nm Quad while from P35~X48 do
8. 780i has FSB holes, not an issue if you not overclocking but may be to some who don't have unlocked CPU.
9. hot plug SATA doesn't work in Vista with NV chipset :/

nope. I get rid of the pc within 2 - 4 months - so no, i don't like to overclock as i don't want to damage any resale value on the pc.

haha, what the buyer doesnt know, cant hurt him ;)

but any case... so you say the Maximus is not an option either? damn... well there go my two boards of choice...

I need a DDR2 board caus I have 2GB of DDR2-1066 CL5 RAM, which I just bought. My previous board (Asus P5W-DH Deluxe) started giving **** with it, so I took it to suppliers and am going to get a credit for it. Now I need to decide what to get, and this is being a bit of a problem. I can only get Asus boards from my supplier (There are also the XFX 780i and a couple of Intel boards), but these I am not really looking at as options.

I have quite a bit to spend, so budget is not a problem (R2600.00 credit) plus I can always put in a couple extra hundred if need be.

So yeah, any suggestions will be welcome.

According to some web-site I seen can't remb where it was the gigabyte 780I sli is the best one to get.Because it was the only one where when u sli all 3 the pci-E card runs @ 16X.Others downgrade to 8x after u have 3 cards.

IMHO rather get a P35/X48 unless you like to "Bling" out with your Mobo ;)

Oh yes 8800GTX as well big deal its the same GPU just A2 stepping instead of A3 on Ultra.
Point is it's only for R4.5K graphics cards and more

As for GB 780i, nope you can't buy that Mobo because it was discontinued, as I said earlier 780i chipset is rubbish. XFX 780i is probably much better than any other 780i board you can get locally.

So this confirms what I had decided earlier - I won't be going 780i and SLi.

Yeah but what about the Rampage Formula? X48 chipset board with DDR2. Anyone have any info on it?

mmm yeah nice board, but, dont see it being avaliable anywhere in SA. I have been sittin without a pc since Sunday, and a TyTn II just doesnt do it for me any more :/

If anyone has any ideas where/when there iwll be stock of the Rampage Formula, please feel free to inform...

X48 isn't looking like its coming out anytime soon to the masses.
Get whatever you can really, X38-DQ6 is a good board as well...
But since you have to buy Asus I have no idea
