ATI 4870X2 and 5870

Yeah, I'm aware they're bigger overseas, and I the reference board thing - but even my XFX died at about 2.5 years, so I'm just a bit torn atm, I wasn't planning on getting a new GPU just yet.

Hehehe...I would be the first to rubbish their name if they ripped me off..lol:p

And hey, Ive had a XFX card before and they're really nice. I just think the brand loyalty thing is sometimes a bit *dof* when it comes to GFX cards. Unless were talking about 10 year warranties(eg EVGA) etc etc.

It all depends I suppose:)

Yah, I'm not loyal to any brand, had several Gigabytes (3yr warranty mostly) and some Asus and some I don't remember, and this XFX was the latest, but the extended warranty does not apply to SA as I said in another thread, sooo, will have to ponder.

Have you ordered your 5870 ? What's the stock situtation, any idea?

No Im holding out for Nvidia's possible new cards by end November. If not then I'll prob get a 5850/5870. I think stock is only coming in now so we'll have to wait and see:)
 
There's nothing wrong with brand loyalty imo. There's a reason we're loyal to companies - if they deliver great products why shouldn't we?

At similar price points...yes. With aftermarket cooling etc etc yes. But you won't catch me paying an inflated price for a GFX card just because of the name...No:)

I don't really feel there's anything wrong with it per se, but my feeling is that if a company screws me over enough I won't support them again but I'm not going to stick with nVidia if I can get an ATI with a better bang/buck and a good warranty just because I might like nVidia.

IMO companies should be consumer loyal not the other way around.

Some good advice there Keeper! But jeez have you seen the prices of SSD's? I would have thought that we would have seen some substantial reduction in prices given the current economic climate and the fact that SSD technology is not so immature anymore.

I believe my rig is good enough for what I want to do with it (gaming, browsing) but agree, I expect an SSD to provide quite a nice jump in performance.

Interestingly (not that I care too much about it) is that Windows 7's performance index rates my 4870X2 as only "6.3", with an overall "5.9", the bottleneck being the HDD. I would have thought that the 4870X2 would have been rated somewhat higher given the maximum rating of "7.9".

Anyone have experience in overclocking the 4870X2? Does one use the Catalyst App? I have tried bumping the clock speeds up in Catalyst using the OverDrive tab settings, but it does not seem to make any difference, having tested before and after ratings using 3Dmark and Windows Performance Index. Just curious...

Unless you're multitasking a lot, and I mean loading your system under extreme memory usage, or doing hectic video work or database stuff, I don't see an SSD worth the cost at all. Maybe on a notebook, but it's really just gonna boot Windows faster and make games load a bit quicker / level loads etc;

I personally think SSDs are way overpriced for the benefit, wait a few years, they'll be even faster and cheaper.
 
well a CPU/SSD IS gonna give him more performance than another 4870x2, trust me...
 
I've been considering ripping like an 8gb SSD out of an EEEPC just to use to boot Windows and some of my most commonly used apps.
 
You can get a 64gig gskill falcon for 2600. There's also an apacer one for 2000, but no idea about the performance. From prophecy.

The gskill will make your pc fly though
