Ok so decided its time to get me a new GFX card.

Trying to decide between the 5770 and the 5850. Obviously the 5850 is better, but price and availability I am leaning towards the 5770.

Can you guys give me some thoughts on the 5770, I will be upgrading from a 8800GT, will it be a substantial upgrade or not? Been out of the Gfx scene for a while so horribly out of touch.

Ultimately I would love a 5850, but yeah there is quite a large price difference and not sure if it is actually worth it.

It is worth every cent - you will not be disappointed. What brand were you looking at? The Club3d is really good value for money - the Sapphires are also very good.

Something that is sometimes overlooked, is that it is not always what you are upgrading TO - but what you are upgrading FROM - and not everybody wants to spend R3k on a display card.... Upgrading from a 4650/8800 to a 5770 will be a massive improvement.

I'm also looking at the 5770 atm. My 8800GT died on me yesterday so I need a replacement. I don't think my PSU will cope with a 5850 so I'll probably settle for the 5770 and save R1000 in the process. :)

Cool so others in the same boat as me :D

My question is - would it be wise to spend the extra R1000 +- and go for a 5850.

Also what are your thoughts on the Spahire range? Was thinking of a saphire 5850.

Sapphire is really good, sell quite a few of them. CLub3D also good, sell a lot of those too....

Cool thanks bro. I am just not sure if I should bite the bullet now and spend a bit more and get the 5850, everyone says its the best bang for buck card.

Your PSU should cope, although it is technically underpowered I run a 8800 on a 350W no-name PSU.... Test it, if it craps out change it. Regarding your previous question, the 5770 is around R1600 and the 5850 around R3000 - so not really comparable. I can tell you that if I were to upgrade, I would go for the 5770 - because I cannot justify the almost double price, regardless of the 5850 performance. What screen do you have?

I went from a 8800GT to a 5770, seemed the same to me as I could play all the games I play on the 8800GT at 1920x1080, and some games the 8800GT was better like COD4. Frame rates might be higher with the 5770, but the "visual graphics experience" at 1920 X 1080 does not look as good on a 5770 for some reason. NVidia still a better chip IMO

Try dirt2. It's just beautiful in DX11.

Huh? the 5770 beats out the 8800 by an average of 20% while using 50W less power.
As for the OP, the 5770 is the better value for money, but dont expect to be able to max out everything at 1920x1080. If you want max settings then the 5850 makes the most sense. Anything above that and value for money goes out the window.

Hey Conradl, I have 2 x samsung 2333SW's

Personally I am leaning towards the 5850, Yes its almost double, but seems to make more sense long term.

For a 23" it may make more sense to do the 5850.

/Hijacks thread - you chaps with the 8800 upgrade requirements - how much do you want for the card? I have a guy who needs a 8800 for his mac? We could make deal :D
