ATI has officially confirmed

ATI said in front of 150+ journalists that the R600XT won't be able to compete with the Geforce 8800 GTX. The dream is dead and Radeon HD 2900 XT won't be able to catch up with the six month old Geforce 8800 GTX.

ATI said that R600XT, Radeon HD 2900XT has about the same performance as the 8800 GTS. Radeon HD 2900 XTX won't be launched in mid may and will be delayed to Q3 2007. We already wrote about this here.

The dream that AMD can do something and return as the high end market leader is gone. R600 trails against G80. Congratulations Nvidia.

whoah

Funny how that can be taken out of context anyway...
HD 2900XT is better than 8800GTS 640MB, but much cheaper...
Overclocks well and comes with great Valve games including Episode 2, Team Fortress and another game. You get HDCP over HDMI and DVI and all of this for $399.

The card is excellent at physics, and video encoding as well. So much so that you can play a game like Call Of Juarez (DX10) at 1920x1200 @ 60fps and encode two movies at the same time, while doing a physics simulation all at the same time :)

HD 2900XT is much better product than 640MB GTS and it's MSRP is $399... That right there is a winner. :)

ShockG I agree 100% man, but wheres the competition?? Wheres their flagship product? AMD I think will make an impact with their HD 2950 range so lets wait and see if they can reclaim being the beast of the brunt ;)
Actually, were they ever that?

The only time I can remember ATI being the leader of the pack was when NVIDIA made their biggest mistake yet: FX5xxx. ATI was the leader with the 9800 at that time, but it was soon reclaimed by NVIDIA with the 6-series.

But they seem to be lagging behind of late...

well... amd have been sitting with these cards long enough, but i did hear that the HD 2900TX has a physics processor on it, so when games start to use physics to a point were cpu's won't be enough, these cards will start to shine

AMD ATI better bring out something revolutionary soon. We all hoped the merger would bring that about. How long would such a product take to develop? I want to see my OS and other programs running transparently on the CPU and GPU depending on which is faster. Like encoding media should just happen on the GPU without specialised software.

My concern is not the ATI hardware , but its lack of Linux software support compared to Nvidia. The reason the 5% Linux market share is important is because people inquire from Linux gurus what to buy. I have lost count of how many people I have convinced that Nvidia is the way to go.

The point which holds the most water is that if a company can afford and are willing to spend money to write software for 5% of its market, it can afford and will be willing to do its best in other sectors to create a win/win situation for the company and customer. That translates to a better product.

the physics part is done through the vec5 Shaders so it's not really a specialized chip for physics. What is special though is that the shaders themselves are very flexible and efficient.

As for ATI having led nvidia, well its been almost always ATI by a slight margin. Problem was either feature set or availability...

GF3 > R7500
GF4 > R8500
R9700 > 5800
R9800 > 5900
X800XT > 6800U
X1800XT > 7800GTX (256MB)
X1900XTX > 7900GTX
** 7950GX2 can't really be counted as 1 card.
Its only now hat 8800GTX > 2900XTX

ShockG, you may be right that the ATI hardware was superior (especially during geforce FX series) but if you look at that resource hefty control panel and the similar, their software side was something that was lacking...

I think I'll wait until the 8800GTX's price drops enough, maybe I'll buy it then. I wouldn't mind buying it now, but the bank manager disagrees :(
