Within the last few months, this is now the third time this has happened to me.

Insert my card and as I start typing in my PIN, the machine stops responding completely. So now I need to stand in front of the machine like a **** to explain to people behind me that my card is stuck inside. Some look at you funny because they think you're talking kak.

All three times it was at the same ATM, which happens to be walking distance from me.

And yes I need cash to pay for my cigarettes that I buy from a street vendor (support the little guy!)

Is this something that has become common lately? Standard Bank is coining it with card-re[placement fees. I'm actually thinking of sending them a mail to replace my card for free because it's not my fault their machine was broken.

Never happened to me. I saw an ATM go down mid transaction at a Nedbank ATM only once and that was when people where working on it at the back. Dude waited a few minutes and once they where done it spit his card out.

Maybe something is wrong with your particular card that causes it to freeze. Perhaps damaged in some way causing read errors.

Why don't you do cardless cash withdrawals? Not sure if that's a thing with SB.

For the little guy... ->> https://www.yoco.com/za/ OR https://www.absa.co.za/business/bank-my-business/make-and-receive-payments/smartpay/ etc. etc.

These were three different cards. I think there's something wrong with that particular ATM.

And yes, I do a lot of cardless transactions, but sometimes it's just easier to pop in your card into an ATM when you're close to one.

Is it in the sticks? Might be using vsat and it's connection is dodgy.

had it before myself, other cards work, not mine, simply refuses to go into the machine,

either withdraw someplace else, or report it to the Banks ATM division.

You supporting the illegal cigarette market?

The ABSA ATM at our local Spar is so slow, it normally take 1min between every step. I also sometimes think it has frozen when you used to the fast ATM's

I’m assuming you don’t know that banks will replace a card for free if a machine swallows it?

Your assumption is flawed. Both my previous cards that were swallowed triggered a line-item on my statement when I asked for a replacement. I think it's something like R160.

What's more is that cardless transactions do not work from the moment you report the card as lost or stolen - even though your internet banking continues to work. To get around this I have to EFT money to someone I know and ask them to send me a cardless transaction.

Woah !

It should never happen like that.

They are supposed to check that its not in use before taking it down, then they take it out of service, which means the app shuts down after the transaction is complete.
Then lets say a card does get stuck, its supposed to hold the card because it can't tell if the customer is still there.

That is pretty shocking

Can you not do cardless transactions on the ATM?
