ATM's freezing mid transaction

Maybe something is wrong with your particular card that causes it to freeze. Perhaps damaged in some way causing read errors.

Why don't you do cardless cash withdrawals? Not sure if that's a thing with SB.
Yes it is. They call it instant money. Sends a token number to someone's phone and a pin. I use it because I pay a R12 fee as opposed to their exorbitant cash withdrawal fee for an ATM transaction. Just send it to my own phone.

Capitec or Tymebank. You can use any ATM at just R10 per R1k flat fee.
I pay R7.50 at an SB ATM or R10 at any other ATM. Thing is I hardly ever withdraw cash so it isn't really a drawing card. If I withdraw money more than thrice a month, it's a lot.

Even if I want to drink, I do an instant EFT to the smokkelhuis owner while I'm walking there

Within the last few months, this is now the third time this has happened to me.

Insert my card and as I start typing in my PIN, the machine stops responding completely. So now I need to stand in front of the machine like a **** to explain to people behind me that my card is stuck inside. Some look at you funny because they think you're talking kak.

All three times it was at the same ATM, which happens to be walking distance from me.

And yes I need cash to pay for my cigarettes that I buy from a street vendor (support the little guy!)

Is this something that has become common lately? Standard Bank is coining it with card-re[placement fees. I'm actually thinking of sending them a mail to replace my card for free because it's not my fault their machine was broken.
Sounds like a faulty machine. I would report it to Standard but most likely they will just remove the machine as most banks are pushing for cashless. Lets face it in my area about 70% of the clients is with standard bank and they removed the ATMs in our area. And suggested we use tap to pay or yoco instead, or apple pay.

Its like cash is being phased out completely.

Oh depending on your access you can withdraw cash at supermarkets too with std. At the tills

Found an odd bug in an ATM once.

My girlfriend at the time had a card from bank A (can't remember, could have been ABSA) and she needed to draw money from an ATM. But there were no ATMs from her own bank within walking distance, so she used another ATM (let's say it was Nedbank for example).

Her pin code at her own bank was 5 digits, but the other bank's ATM would only accept a 4 digit pin. So, she entered 4 of the 5 digits, it immediately tried to match the pin against her pin, and failed. Just thought it was funny - the other bank's ATM was hardcoded for a 4 digit pin, and this broke anyone using a longer pin code.

Your assumption is flawed. Both my previous cards that were swallowed triggered a line-item on my statement when I asked for a replacement. I think it's something like R160.

What's more is that cardless transactions do not work from the moment you report the card as lost or stolen - even though your internet banking continues to work. To get around this I have to EFT money to someone I know and ask them to send me a cardless transaction.

Yes unless you specifically mention you were ordering a replacement due to a machine swallowing your card they will charge you. Banks don’t charge for a replacement if it’s due to a machine fault.

Stop using the ATM. Tell the cigarette guy to get a YOCO. Or pay him R5k up front and just collect cigarettes until your credit runs out.
With Ikhokha they can Tap on Phone no machine is needed.

I've also never experienced an ATM freeze during transaction but they are always out of order.

I would suggest pressing some buttons to see how it responds in the future before using it. Or use tap services.

Open a PureSave account using the app. My main account (into which my salary goes) is a MarketLink account which charges R22 per transaction! Needless to say, if and when I need cash, I first transfer it to the PS.

With PureSave it's R1.50 at POS terminals for transactions or cash back, R7.50 at an SB ATM and R10 at other banks.

I don't pay any monthly account maintenance fee for either account and the Marketlink account gives something back if you maintain a positive balance. So by and large they're paying me to bank with them.

I used to get a few hundred back when I still had uCount, but I've cancelled both my Titanium cheque and credit cards and it's way too much effort to jump through hoops to get rewards using debit cards.

Being in the industry, the card slot's LED flashes green to indicate that the machine is operational. Not sure if you know that, if you don't see the slot flashing, do NOT insert your card!

Tomorrow this forum will post that they don't tip car guards; and my vendor tried to get an income as a car guard. Like I said, I try to support the informal trade.

Smokes, veggies and fruit I buy from these guys. I prefer to do it this way as opposed to someone coming to knock on my door begging for skaftin.
