My dell mini 9 plays mkv files just fine as long as it is on the hdd and not another storage like sd card or usb stick.
 
Just tried a 1080p vid on Acer Aspire One 110L.

Intel Atom N270 @ 1.6GHz (with Hyperthreading)
512MB RAM
8GB SSD

It SERIOUSLY struggles. Doubt 720p would be much better
 
There's something about mkv files usually having x264 encoded content which has more profiles, etc, to it than hardware H.264 decoders can handle.
 
No i think snerd your problem may be memory.

I tried a 720p and it ran smooth with 1gb memory 8gb ssd, i would imagine 1080p would also run just fine.

You can also convert it though from mkv to divx without losing much quality using winavi. This is nice for the divx player i have. Thatv was on tinyxp though which they say runs way faster.

Snerd how did you play a 1080p file on your 8gb ssd? Was it a small file hey? Did you play the mkv from your 8gb hdd?

Maybe, but I doubt it. Tried a few 2 minute trailers. Around 128MB each.

Don't watch the stream; download it and watch it offline.

I tried Jennifer's Body ( OMG what a babe :D ), Tron, and a few others.
 
Well for a fair comparison, try the Apple one.
 
Well i tried that one and it runs but everything is in slow motion.

Problem with that apple one is i have no idea how to download it haha, if i click on it. it loads and cannot see an option to download it.

Yea 1080p so far seems a bit too much but 720p does work, will try this one snerd just tell me how to download :D
