Attack on Iran may 'open Pandora's box'

Read: "Nuke". Flying a plane into a building is not a nuke. It might kill just as many people (I doubt) but it still won't evoke the same feelings in governments around the world. Suicide bombs aren't nukes.

If, by "dirty bomb", you mean chemical warfare... that's another issue entirely. That is quite possible.

A dirty bomb might be blowing up a whole lot of radioactive **** ( like you can go pick up at Vaalputs ) in a big city centre. It does not have to be a nuclear bomb.

I disagree. It would be relatively easy. Put it in a standard shipping container and put it on the next ship heading to New York. Could do some nice damage. The thing is, why the hell would they do that? Alan85 is right. The US would glass them for that. They win nothing. Much as we might not like them, the government of Iran is not a fringe terrorist group of lunatics wanting to die. There is utterly no win for them in using a nuke aggressively. The US invaded and took out the government of Afganistan for knocking over 2 buildings. Anyone have any doubts as to what would happen if you managed to hit them with a nuke? There are two things you can do as a small country with nukes. 1)Use it as a bargaining chip. 2) (possibly) prevent the US from invading you. Thats what Iran is doing. It's the same reason we built nukes back in the day. The whole idea was that if we ever actually faced an actual invasion, we would threaten to use them in order to make the US interven on our behalf.

Wouldn't matter. If you give a terrorist group a nuke, the US is going to hold you repsonsible and glass you along with the terrorists.

Oh I think if they get nuked they will nuke right back. Thats why they build the damn things after all. It's all aboout precedent. The nuclear stockpiles are meant as a deterrant. If you are nuked and don't respond, then your deterrent is worthless. And Russia will support them on it.

Well I believe glowing Ahemi and his fellow extremists to pretty damn looney.

After a city is erased by a nuke would they be willing to risk total annihilation by retaliating if they managed to prove the Iranians were directly involved in the attack. Bit tough to sell that to the American people. Saying "we're going to find the government responsible, prove it and suffer our own annihilation after we've nuked them".

I think those extremist are crazy enough to try and get away with it.

Well exactly that is predicted in the Bible, even if it is the religious and the freakoids reads the bible and wants it to be true by enacting the deed, the outcome is the same as the prediction(s) will then be true. So we know what is to be but we do not know when. 2012 Seems to be a very convenient date for many reasons!

Iran has no chance of developing MAD parity with the US so its hardly a consideration don't you think.

They don't even need parity. Look at Pakistan. They have around 50 warheads.

So it's perfectly reasonable to expect over a period of time that Iran will develop that many and ICBMs to deliver them.

So how many U.S cities could they destroy with those?

Land launched ICMB's will not get a chance to leave their silo's if the US is intent on nuking a country like Iran. But if we can pretend that Iran has ICBM's capable of reaching the US and nuclear warheads we can pretend that the US has a missile shield that works. Pointless.

A simple question.

Do you think that after a U.S city has been destroyed the U.S would after identifying the culprit perhaps months later would launch a nuclear strike annihilating that country at the cost of loosing 100 000s more of there own citizens?

Do you honestly believe that the U.S could destroy every silo before an ICBM could be launched at them? It's called MAD for a reason.
