Hi All,Hope you can help

My heart is semi set on an Audi A3 2.0T.Never owned or driven a car with a turbo yet.
Has anyone experienced problems re the turbo in/out of warranty & costs of fixing on this car.
Looking to buy one, 07-08 between 85 &115000km's.
Currently have a Golf 5 2.0 FSI Sportline so it would be senseless for my own preference to take the G5 GTI(too common & weary of type of drivers) hence A3 as it has the same engine as GTI,Although my FSI has much more extras i'm willing to sacrifice the heated seats, cruise control, auto headlights & wipers sunroof etc. As it is hard to find A3's with all that extras as almost all GTI'S has all those extras.
My other options are later models but lower power in the Golf 6 1.4 TSI HIGHLINE 118KW & Audi A3 1.8T(prefer Golf for the fuel consumption + turbo&supercharged) Finance will cost about R500-R700 more and insurance increases thus my first choice is the 2.0T but I do not want to sit with problems as my FSI has treated me extremely well.
Thanks

I personally prefer a bigger engine vs a turbo. On my fourth Audi now (FSi 3.2 Quattro). None of them have been turbos.
Just skeptic of them.

Freeway driving is also soooooo much nicer with a large engine.

Just my 2c.

Where do you live Nero?

I'm on my second 2.0T. They're beautiful engines, but I would be wary of any "out of warranty" turbo on any make or engine.

Unfortunately that's not always an option. The 2.0T engine can be faster and more fuel efficient than a 3.2 NA.

Town driving will see a less fuel usage on the 2L vs the 3.2L for sure, but doubt it on the freeway.
My wife had a 2.0T (or 1.8T - can't remember). She used to get about 180kms more than me per tank with day to day usage. On the freeway she got about 700kms where I get just over 1000kms. So depends on usage I suppose.
When she made use of her turbo frequently her usage would almost come down in line with mine.

The higher revs at 120km/h on the smaller engine is a no no for me. Too noisy. My car is almost idling at 120km/h.

That aside, having a turbo just bugs me. I don't trust them. Had too many mates pop them and have to fork out 30k to 40k to replace/fix them.

Nice cars though. Was annoyed when my wife sold hers to get her Sportage. Only thing I never really like in hers was the multitronic gearbox. Prefer tiptronic personally.

I agree that they're decent cars, can't go wrong with Audi ;-) Unfortunately for you Audi is replacing the 3.2 with the 3.0T.

As for the gearbox, Stronic is the only way to live! :-P

What is Stronic? Not been keeping up with the car tech (is it new tech?).
The 3.0T is the reference model for mine and has been for a while. None of the dealers in Gauteng even have a 3.2 FSi on their books. Always have to reference the 3.0T. Coastal dealers have it though

I won't replace my A6 for a while though. Still goes like the day I got it.

It's Audi's Direct-Shift Gearbox.

Considering what a pleasure it is to drive an S4, I see big things for the 3.0T. I would definitely consider it in future.

I live in CT,seeing that u on your 2nd,have u had any problems with your turbo/engine while under guarantee? & what is your km's currently on?

Ah, then you don't necessarily need a turbo. However, it is the way the world is moving due to emissions standards.

I've had the seal on my turbo rupture, it results in initial power loss and increased lag. Fortunately not a difficult or expensive fix. The flap also wasn't sealing at one point, again not an expensive fix. This was on a 2006 model. The turbo itself hasn't been an issue, at least not in the initial 5 years I had the A3.

My current turbo, 2011, hasn't given me a day's problem.

The diesel turbos are under far more pressure than the petrol ones, those models are the main source of turbo failure and replacement.

but a large engine fitted with a turbo would be more efficient than a large engine without one

Just note that the cambelt on the 2.0T needs replacing at 120,000km. That will set you back R10k.

There are several issues with this engine that you can read up on here:

If you are considering going for the DSG (or S-tronic) gearbox note that failure of the mechatronic unit in it will cost several tens of thousands of Rands to repair. But it seems as if this problem normally happens quite early when the car is still under motor plan.

Long distance cruising is always better in bigger engines, also has a smoother power delivery.
But at a the expense of fuel efficiency and maintenance.

The 20T is a very decent engine even at highway speeds.
Hardly noisy very small difference between it and the 3.2 at 120kmph.
Turbos do use less fuel hence most new cars have small engine turbos.
Try the VW 1.4 TSis you would never guess its a 1.4.

Turbos are cheaper to replace these days out of warranty then 5 years ago, 6-8000 for the original replacement turbo, 10-15000 if done by the stealers.

Unfortunately that's not always an option. The 2.0T engine can be faster and more fuel efficient than a 3.2 NA.

Turbo can substantially make the engine run quieter. I drive a 2010 Audi 1.4 turbo with little engine noise intruding into the cabin versus the Golf 4 GTi 1.8 turbo I used to drive before 2005. In fact, the engine is more quiet than my 3.0 twin turbo BMW engine.

The difference comes in noise levels when both engines are stressed. The 1.4 Turbo will obviously scream like it is being strangled but the 3.0 Turbo will scream, shouting for more torture.

On economy side, the 1.4 Turbo win hands down. I except the 2008 Audi 2.0 Turbo to offer good balance of economy and power.

VW quoted me R43000 to replace the turbo in my 1.9TDI
