Audi A3 Temperature Issue (Car running cold)

I am annoyed with the lack of a temperature gauges in the Astra H and Corsa D. Really loving the two temperature gauges in my 407, only when the oil is on temperature do I nail it.
 
Car booked in. Now to wait and see what they say. Said they will put car on the diagnostics to check for any sensor errors also. Though, I would assume that is standard practice whenever a car is brought in.
 
They'll have a diagnostic script based on symptom, and a temp sensor test will be part of that test

Eh it's neither here nor there for me, it's not like they are accurate anyway. A light is good enough.

I still prefer having a gauge. That way you will notice soon as the car starts running hotter than it normally does....and without a gauge...I would not have noticed the car is taking abnormally long to get to operating temp.

But what does the light tell you? Your water is not on temperature yet? The oil is too hot?

No, what you need is a fine piece of art, leather stitched, jewel like detailing. That's hot.

Your car is overheating pull over :) a big light bam. That's all a gauge really is, it's a method of indicating if there is a problem or not.
The accuracy is up for debate I guess, but most of the time its not accurate.

Is there a problem with your car? You suspect there is a problem, but has your car actually experienced any symptoms of the engine not running optimally?

OK, but how do I know the car is on temperature? I know the chipmunk Kia Picantos had a blue temperature light to indicate the engine is still cold, but a gauge is much nicer. But most of them only show water temperature, and ideally you want your oil to be on temperature.

Is it is not generally accepted that for a engine to run optimally it needs to be at operating temperature? And for a car to take 30 minutes to get to that temp is not normal I am told...so I would rather have it fixed....and for a thermostat to be stuck in open position...if that is the cause of my cars issue...most definately is not normal...or optimal surely?

Why do you need to know it's on temperature? Also the one for your water/coolant isn't accurate, it could be ten degrees either way good or bad and the gauge will sit in the middle. And now you just being smug :-P cause you've got an oil temp gauge which has been long gone from a most cars for years.
The Kias do have a light, so do some Honda's, Chevrolets, VWs etc... In fact I think a lot of cars are ditching the actual gauge and only giving the light now.

You're basing this assumption on the gauge, that isn't accurate that there is a problem with the engine. It's possible the gauge is broken, or the sensor isn't right, if you turn your heater on after 5 minutes do you get hot air or not?

I have not been using the heater in the mornings so to not pull more warm air from the engine. I did ask the service manager if it could be a faulty sensor and he said he doubts it as it would then either not show anything or some other erratic behaviour such as jumping straight from cold to hot...but after thirty minutes...it goes from one bar to two...and then 5 minutes or so later goes up to third bar. So the sensor seems to be working normally.

A faulty sensor can also take sometime to show it's warming up, a stuck thermostat symptoms normally are the gauge moves erratically around depending on your driving, the faster and further you go the lower the gauge and the longer you sit in traffic the hotter it gets. My MIL freaking Uno is like that and she won't go get the thermostat fixed.
The reason I'm saying gauges are useless, I had a car go from fine to poof in a split second, there was no other indication there was a problem with cooling, just from mid point to red in the same time a light could've done the same thing :-).

Glad you think so, when the light goes on, it's usually too late. Car would have taken damage already.

Exactly. The type of cars I drive you definitely need a gauge. If it is anywhere off the normal mark you know things are gonna go pear shaped unless you do something right away.

And yes, I do feel rather fancy with my oil temperature gauge :love:
So fancy I might even wear a second monocle.

I don't have any of those fancy oil gauges or anything. Just temp, fuel, rpm and speed. And gear indicator, odometer, trip meter and clock. Oh and outside temperature.

But you do have a fancy car to begin with, so then the gauges don't matter.

One of the small annoyances I have in my car is that because it is manual the bit below the trip and odo hardly ever shows anything. I know there is lots of data on the CANBUS, like what gear you're in for example, that they could have shown there, or the trip computer info, or digital speedo.

Having a fuel consumption readout would just result in suicide.
 
It's a lot of fun actually, on my other car I enjoy it when you floor it and the instant fuel consumption goes to the max of 38.4 l/100km :D
