Audi Q7 (2nd Generation)

Driven: Audi Q7 is the ultimate reason to take a long road trip

The Q7 has the latest safety technology and independent crash test experts, Euro NCAP, awarded the Q7 the maximum five stars for safety.

The drive, performance, interior, engine and general comfort factor made for a five-star experience.

The Q7 comes with quattro all-wheel-drive as standard, and the 3-litre V6 diesel engine (with 183kW and 600Nm) ensures brisk performance, and there's ample power for overtaking.

The stretch from Clanwilliam to Oukiep allowed me to play with the accelerator and while the surge from 100 to 130, for example on an overtake, is a momentary rush, the speed transition from 150 to 200 on those wonderfully flat Northern Cape stretches is without chaos.

A drive that was estimated at five and a half to six hours was completed in four and half.

If the interior is all about comfort then the drive, despite the high speeds, was about calm.

It seemed effortless from the moment the engine started as the Q7 purrs more than it roars.

Audi Q7 60 TSFI e Quattro 2019 review

Should I buy one?

The first is that the space needed for the battery means that, as previously, the PHEV model is available with only five seats, so if squeezing seven people into an SUV is essential to you, you’ll need to look at a regular Q7 or elsewhere.

The second caveat is that the lack of a final price and emissions and fuel economy figures make it impossible to assess the financial aspects.

But if it transpires that the sums do add up, the Q7 TSFI e quattro is a compelling choice as a luxury SUV.

Audi Q7 TFSI e quattro

Step by step, Audi is putting its new electrified models on the road. Presales of the Q7 TFSI e quattro have just started in Germany and other European countries. The SUV, whose plug-in hybrid drive combines a three-liter V6 gasoline engine with a powerful electric motor, is available in two power levels. The top-of-the-line version offers a system output of 335 kW (456 PS) and 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of system torque, while the second version delivers 280 kW (381 PS) and 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft).

The electrification initiative at Audi is in full swing. Four new models with plug-in hybrid drive - in the Q5, A8, A6 and A7 Sportback model lines - will debut on the European market in the second half of 2019 alone. The new Q7 TFSI e quattro continues this series. The plug-in hybrid SUV bears the "TFSI e" logo.

Two power units and a quattro drivetrain: drive and transmission

Like every plug-in hybrid model, the Audi Q7 TFSI e quattro relies on the power of its two hearts. One of the brand's most modern engines serves as the combustion engine - the 3.0 TFSI. The turbocharged, refined V6 delivers an output of 250 kW (340 PS) and 450 Nm (331.9 lb-ft) of torque. It is certified according to the Euro 6d-TEMP emission standard and is fitted with a gasoline particulate filter as standard. A permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM), which is characterized by a high power density and compact design, serves as the electric motor. The PSM, which delivers a peak output of 94 kW and 350 Nm (258.1 lb-ft) of torque, is integrated in the housing of the eight-speed tiptronic. Together with the coupling, which connects the combustion engine to the drivetrain, it forms what is known as the hybrid module.

Audi SQ7 TFSI

Audi presented the SQ7 and the SQ8 with new TFSI engines. The brand is thus responding to the worldwide trend toward sporty gasoline engines in the high-performance SUV segment. The Audi SQ7 and SQ8 feature numerous high-tech suspension components and offer new connectivity and assistance functions. They will launch on the European markets beginning in autumn 2020.

With its output of 373 kW (507 PS) and 770 Nm (567.9 lb-ft) of torque, the 4.0 TFSI gasoline engine propels the large Audi SQ7 and SQ8 extremely powerfully. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) takes just 4.1 seconds; acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h (49.7 to 74.6 mph) just 3.8 seconds. Top speed is electronically governed at 250 km/h (155.3 mph). Depending on the equipment chosen, the SQ7 consumes between 12.1 and 12.0 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (19.4 - 19.6 US mpg), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 278 to 276 grams per kilometer (447.4- 444.2 g/mi). For the SQ8, these figures are also 12.1 to 12.0 liters (19.4 - 19.6 US mpg) and 276 to 275 grams CO2 (444.2 - 442.6 g/mi)).

Pricing! Refreshed Audi Q7 finally touches down in South Africa

The facelifted Audi Q7 has finally landed in South Africa, with the line-up again comprising just a single derivative at launch.

Of course, we expect the 310 kW TDI-badged SQ7 to join the range either later in 2020 or (perhaps more likely) early in 2021.

For now, though, only the Q7 45TDI Quattro will be offered locally, again powered by the Ingolstadt-based firm’s 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, sending an unchanged 183 kW (at 2 900 r/min) and 600 N.m (from as low as 1 500 r/min) to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The price for the Q7 45TDI Quattro? Audi SA lists a figure of R1 328 500, which is some R192 000 more expensive than the pre-facelift model. Of course, we have yet to learn what sort of kit is included as standard, as the German firm may well have bolstered this list.

Audi Q7 (2020) Launch Review

This generation of the Audi Q7 may not have garnered the same sort of attention as the previous (1st-generation) model, but with this new facelifted version, Audi has enhanced the design, improved connectivity and added 4-wheel-steer to the package. We drove the revised premium SUV at its local launch in the Western Cape...

Summary

Design is subjective, but Audi has successfully restyled its Q7 to make it stand out markedly from its immediate predecessor; it now looks interesting (or distinctive) enough to be seriously considered in a segment where the ability to make a statement is a major selling point.

Whereas many of its rivals have chased performance and handling gains – sometimes to the detriment of ride handling and plushness – Ingolstadt's premium SUV perfectly balances performance and comfort. It feels stable and comfortable on the road, allied with impeccable road manners that make you feel entirely in control of what the sizeable SUV is doing... even at speed, on a twisty piece of road.

The update to the interior infotainment system is very welcome and gives the cabin a modern feel, replete with all the smartphone connectedness you may need. While the asking prices of these premium SUVs seem unfathomable to most of us, the premium demanded for the Q7 is in line with those of its rivals; the newcomer certainly warrants its place in this ultra-competitive segment as the sensible, comfortable and practical choice.

DRIVEN: Audi Q7 45 TDI Quattro Tiptronic

So, what about the powertrain? Well, while the familiar six-cylinder unit is untouched, still delivering 183 kW and 600 N.m to all four corners via an smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, that needn’t be seen as a negative. It’s a lovely, creamy oil-burner, offering a pleasing mix of low-down shove and open-road refinement.

Indeed, the Q7 isn’t the sort of SUV you feel the need to hustle along your favourite slice of twisty tarmac. Instead, it prefers to float along calmly in comfort mode, munching mile after mile with quiet competency.

Sure, the likes of BMW’s X5 and the aforementioned Cayenne offer a decidedly more engaging driving experience. And, yes, something like the Land Rover Discovery boasts a broader set of off-road skills. But it’s the Q7’s laser-like focus on refinement and comfort that ultimately defines it. And, despite so many of the segment's contenders chasing performance over practicality, there’s certainly still very much a place for a softly sprung luxury SUV with oodles of space.

As with other new Audi models launched in South Africa the package concept is also valid on the Q7 so you get to choose between Comfort, Black styling or S-line interior.

The exterior design changes, improved connectivity and tech inside the Audi Q7 have given it more stature and coupled with a very comfortable drive, decent performance and driving dynamics it's a serious contender in its category.

While pricing may make you look twice it's still very much in line with the competition. For an additional R60 000 you get to drive the S-Line over the standard model and in that context, it would be money well spent.

Verdict

The refreshed Audi Q7 ticks just about all the boxes in this segment. Its styling might be a tad too conservative for some, but the latest updates have undeniably given the Q7 more kerb- as well as road presence. The interior is spacious and practical (even in 7-seater guise) and the cabin can be lavishly-equipped with Audi’s latest technology, provided that you are willing to splurge on the Ingolstadt-based brand’s extensive options list. In terms of performance, the Q7 performs quite spiritedly – it definitely doesn’t lack punch and, as for its day-to-day efficiency, that's the cherry on top.

With a starting price of R1 328 500, this Q7 45 TDI quattro S line appears to be competitively priced compared with its rivals, but you are likely to spend additional capital on optional extras. This particular Q7 test unit came generously-specced with over R300 000 worth of extras, taking the overall price to over R1 668 790, which is substantial. You can almost buy the new SQ7 for that money...

Price aside, the facelifted Q7 is more accomplished than it was in 2015 and we think the latest updates have ultimately strengthened the Q7’s buying proposition. So much so, in fact, that it’s entirely conceivable that this latest Q7 may very well become a finalist in the Premium SUV category of the 2021/22 #CarsAwards. If that’s not reason enough to take the Q7 for a test drive, what is?
