Audi Q7 (2nd Generation)

Audi Q7 competition plus

In the SUV segment, Audi is heading into the 2022 model year with the edition models Audi Q7 and Q8 competition plus. Optional equipment for the exterior and interior add even more appeal to the biggest members of the Q family. The appearance package black plus makes the S line exterior package stand out even more with its dynamic look for the Audi Q7 as well as the Q8. The black Singlegrame grille including the gills and frame as well as black Audi rings and clips really set the front of these two edition models apart.

A new carbon package, already available as an option for the Audi Q7, with carbon mirror housing and door inlays, highlight the sporty nature of these edition models. For the Audi Q8, the Singleframe mask is also glossy black. Both vehicles are delivered on 21" aluminum wheels. The Audi Q7 can be ordered with optional 22" wheels and the Q8 even with 23" wheels. While the Audi Q7 features black decorative elements in the new "S line competition plus" line, the carbon bumper of the Audi Q8 really highlights the sporty nature of the SUV. Both edition models are equipped with red brake calipers and welcome passengers with an LED projection of the S logo.

EPIC DRIVE: Audi Q7 and Mercedes GLE Coupé become rubies in the rough

The verdict

The new Audi Q7 is by no means a slouch. It’s competent, comfortable, efficient and with a third row of seats, infinitely practical. But nothing about it makes me want to give it an overwhelming recommendation. As we know, the Q7 shares the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. Like a household with five children all vying for their parents’ affection, trying to be individuals and find their way in the world, the law of averages dictates they cannot all be the first team sports captain, prom king or valedictorian. The Audi Q7 seems destined to soldier on in the shadows of its siblings.

On the other hand, the Mercedes-Benz suffers no such crisis of confidence. The extrovert styling, innovative interior and powerful engine all make it a worthy offering. The sometimes choppy, occasionally sloppy ride does blemish its report card a little, but on the whole it’s an acceptable trade-off for the agility it adds. The GLE Coupé does a brilliant job of contradicting your preconceived notions of what an SUV should be. More than that, it’s simply the one I find myself drawn to and the one I’d most like to park in my driveway.

ABT bumps up the power on petrol-powered Audi SQ7 and SQ8

Audi’s current pair of turbopetrol performance SUVs, the SQ7 and SQ8, has been given a modest modification package at the hands of ABT which includes an increase in power and some mild visual enhancements.

Both the SQ7 and SQ8 make use of VAG’s turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 which sends 373 kW and 770 N.m of torque to all four-wheels. Using an ABT Power S engine control unit, the tuning firm has been able to increase this output to 478 kW and 850 N.m.

ABT hasn’t given any performance details on the SQ7 but it claims that with this bump in power, the SQ8 will sprint from 0-100 km/h in 3,8 seconds. As standard, Audi claims a time of 4,1 seconds.

To complement this power output, both cars have been fitted with an aero package which provides skirt add-ons to the front and rear. For the SQ7, 102 mm quadpipes and a set of HR22 alloy wheels in dark smoke or gloss black acts as the finishing touch for the customised performance SUVs. Optionally, the GR22 design is available in matte and gloss black.

The quadpipes are not mentioned for the SQ8 but wheel options include the 23-inch High PerformanceGR design.

Audi Q7 55 TFSIe 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

As ever with a PHEV, the key to the Q7 55 TFSIe is in how often you can plug it in. If you have no charger at home or at work, the electric element just becomes a glorified paperweight.

But even if you do have a charging facility in either of those locations, the X5 xDrive45e will make better use of it, with its bigger battery giving it greater flexibility. So if you’re going to run a PHEV SUV (especially if you’re a company car driver), that BMW makes both more emotional and economic sense than this Audi.

REVIEW | Audi Q7 blends style and class in a bid to outshine its rivals in SA

• Audi's Q7 received a comprehensive facelift in late 2020.

• One engine powers the two models in the revised line-up.

• Our test model, the Q7 45 TDI S Line, is priced from R1.4 million.

Audi's new and updated Q7 has been given a comprehensive facelift, with several enhancements brought about to make the SUV as fresh as ever. The updates include alterations to both the exterior and interior, as well as improvements to the drivetrain.

The Q7 has been around since late 2005 and has gone onto become one of Audi's top-selling SUVs. It goes without saying that the Q7 is an important vehicle for the German automaker, and keeping it fresh and relevant can't be taken for granted.

The local Q7 line-up consists of two models in its latest iteration: the Q7 45 TDI and Q7 45 TDI S Line. Both models are powered by the same engine and rides on the same architecture, but the S Line boasts exterior accents, 20-inch wheels, and aluminium roof rails for extra differentiation.

THE TOP GEAR TWIN TEST: AUDI Q7 VS LAND ROVER DEFENDER

We know the Defender is good off-road, but does it also function as a family hauler? Bring on the Audi Q7. And lots of children

Let’s be honest here, people buy large SUVs because there’s a sense of power and control with a big car. They also need something that can cope with their maximum capacity needs, even if the day-to-day requires something more modest. The strange thing here is that the Audi Q7 is a brilliant points-scorer of a car that somehow manages to feel quite bloodless. A full-size SUV for those that don’t really mind what car they have as long as it has all the usual Audi attributes.

The Defender, on the other hand, is empirically less capable, and yet possessed of a self-assurance and character that makes it impossible to resist. The sense of purpose, ruggedness, general machismo and rounded capability – it’s all awfully obvious and yet genuinely attractive. There’s not a bad car here, but if you want a winner, the Land Rover Defender walks it.

Audi Q7 45TDI S Line Competition (2023) Price & Specs

Audi South Africa has quietly added a new special-edition Q7 45TDI S Line Competition derivative to its range. Here’s how much the flagship model will cost you…

The Audi Q7 45TDI S Line Competition has quietly touched down in South Africa, arriving as a special-edition derivative positioned at the summit of the local Q7 range.

The newcomer slots in above the Q7 45TDI quattro and Q7 45TDI quattro S Line, and is priced from R1 663 100 (hat-tip to the well-informed folks over at duoporta.com for the information). That makes it R78 300 more expensive than the standard Q7 S Line model.

Well, the Q7 45TDI S Line Competition features Audi’s Black Styling Plus package as standard, along with black roof rails, carbon side-mirror caps, a panoramic sunroof, black 22-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels (though seemingly without the red brake callipers shown in the accompanying European images), Matrix LED headlamps and door-entrance LED projectors.

How much does the Audi Q7 cost in South Africa?

Audi Q7 45TDI quattro – R1 539 800

Audi Q7 45TDI quattro S Line – R1 584 800

Audi Q7 45TDI quattro S Line Competition – R1 663 100

The above prices include a 1-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.
