Telkom will boost the speed of its broadband digital subscriber line (DSL) service in mid-August, TechCentral can reveal exclusively.

According to Telkom SA MD Nombulelo Moholi, the company has had to delay implementation of the new, higher-speed service because of a network freeze imposed on it as a result of the 2010 soccer World Cup.

“The product is ready,” says Moholi.

Telkom hasn’t decided yet if it will scrap its existing 4Mbit/s package, or simply migrate these customers to the higher-speed service, Moholi says. It’s possible there will be two high-speed offerings: “up to 4Mbit/s” and “up to 10Mbit/s”.

Gee, I wonder which one would make them more money?

She says also that no decision has been made on whether line speeds on the existing, slower 384kbit/s and 512kbit/s products will be increased.

Go figure...Looks like we low end suckers(subscribers) will be stuck on snail paced speeds forever. Business wise it makes sense since only max 10% of their clients can sync at 4MB/s speeds the rest can't even get 2MB/s. So upgrade 90% of the 384/512 users to say 1/2MB/s respectively, and not be able to handle the load, or upgrade the small minority of users and continue business as usual....i.e milking the customers.

Wait, it's ready ... but we have to wait till August ... um ... well, is it ready? Yes. But, you have to wait till August. Um ... well, but, is it ready?

i.e. no.

Now mid August....blah blah blah.

I'm not holding thumbs it will ever happen. If it does then its a plus, otherwise I'll just stay on 4Mbps forever.

Great, screw over the 384k and 512k users once again, while the top end users continue to receive preference and added value

I just want something faster than my crappy 384kbps :(

I can't believe they consider my crappy connection to be "Broadband". What a joke.

And then to add insult to injury, they call my line "Fast DSL". HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA....!!!!

Wow, so now we have to wait and see if Telkom can actually squeeze this pitiful upgrade into the first decade of the twenty-first century???

Given all their last batch of promises... I doubt it. :(

Come the first year of the second decade and we will still be farting around with these pathetic speeds and service levels.

Congratulations Telkom... your "Next Generation Network" campaign has only made you look like a bunch of clowns who fail at juggling and suck at being funny!

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Another fail! this is actually getting amusing now. November is going to come and go just like June did. And then September is gonna p!ss off (pun intended)... It'll never end :) So then whats this "announcement" at 16:00pm going to be about, oh wait let me guess, September is going to announce that Telkom will continue anal raping their customers so hard.

So why don't you just upgrade to a 4MB line? 384kbps is definitely not broadband... 4MB is hardly broadband.

lol, I so feel like calling telkom and telling the 1st operator that i speak to that they suck donkey balls :P

So Telkom haven't ..

1) announced anything but a 'possible' mid-august date for the implementation
2) decreased adsl bandwidth charges at all
3) addressed higher speeds for all, apart from a very few which might or might not benefit from an increment in speed

all this 'cos they're too busy watching the footie?

Maybe someone should tell some of the kiddies on the NGN chookoo-train ad they're gonna have to jump off the roaler coaster 'cos there's no space for them all.

Anyone remember the WA 'please wait for our announcement you'll be surprised' which turned out to actually be a shock? Telkom has just bettered that!
