Yeah..next thing you know they will be running onto field and tackling umpire.

The mischievous use of these laser pointing devices has escalated and probably in this case just the same type of person who finds excitement in pointing it at passenger aircraft pilots....and nothing to do with cricket rivalry.

The use of the laser pointer at aircraft actually prompted the NSW govt to pass laws in the last two years that ban the use of it for anything other than intended use, and they have come down heavily (jail terms) against those caught using it mischievously.

I don't think Qld have a similar law (yet), but Cricket Australia are intent on finding and dealing with the culprits anyway.

The scary thing is that the green laser pointers are usually the high powered ones that'll easily light a match or burn through a plastic bag (or worse depending on the MW rating you buy). They could literally and permanently blind someone with those things!

Buying a green laser high enough to burn plastic or light a match is going to cost you an arm and a leg. But even the smallest allowed 5 MW in the USA can blind you and a even a small 1 milliwatt beam could cause a spot on the retina.

I have a 40 MW I use at home for astronomy and if I turn the thing on my cat runs away

If the allegations are true, I hope they catch the person and send him to jail. They have been able to track people shining green lasers at airplanes, So I am pretty sure with all the camera's there they can say exactly who it was if it happened

Its easy to make, all you need is an old CD writer lens and a narmal laser pointer, swap the the lenses and voila!

Cricket Australia acts after laser claims

Peter Young, a Cricket Australia spokesman, told the ABC it was "just not cricket to do this sort of thing … it's stupid". "The South African team has advised that it didn't affect them and they're not proposing to make a complaint. CA has apologised to them that this has happened while they are guests in this country and they have accepted that apology."
...
Parnell, 19, described the moment as "strange". "There was a green flash and it was pretty bright and the light seemed to be pointing towards me," he said. "It was all a bit strange. I only saw it then but maybe it was flashed around at other times, I am not sure."

"I am not making any excuses, I think it was a pretty valiant effort to take the catch," he said. "I wouldn't have caught it anyway. You have to be professional and I guess sometimes you have to deal with these things."
