Australia to test Internet filter next month

Interesting to see that it includes torrents, I can imagine thepiratebay*.* is probably going to be filtered.
 
If you really, really want to proctect your children or anyone from anything, then do it yourself, do not pass the buck to anyone else specially not a government........
 
Haha didnt I read somewhere that Bittorrent is changing is protocol to make it look like web traffic to get through shaping or something lol HAHAHA

As a permanent resident of Australia this action by the Aus government is really scary. One headline said that Australia's cyber control will be equavelant to China. But what is even more scary is the non-response of Australians to the proposed fliering. The ones I speak to are not even aware of it.
 
This is scary! It needs to be stopped at all costs. Once this filtering has got a foothold there is no telling what sort of sensorship they can impose. Restricting information equals dumbing down the masses. Read George Orwell's 1984 and 'Animal Farm', and any of David Icke's books. The people must wake up to what the government is trying to do.

Australia will no doubt be the testing ground for this thing. If it becomes successful,
implemmentation in other parts of the world will no doubt follow. Until then savvy Aussies will be able to use encrypted proxy tunnels to get to whatever they want without their ISP or their government seeing what they are reading.

Come on, law abiding citizens don't need access to warez, torrent, political discussion, hacking and adult picture sites (unless they're run as registered businesses in OZ and pay their taxes). Those citizens who complain will automatically be flagged as terrorists or pedophiles.

Internet user dissent? What dissent? Just some terrorists, perverts and pirates trying to push their filth. :)

It will succeed.

However the action is draconian. Imagine if the govt bugged your phone and prevented you from calling certain local and international numbers. Well this is the same.

What's wrong with programs like NetNanny for the kids and cleaning the web off child abuse images, but keeping everything else. I guess the gov knows better. Oh well.....

EPIC FAIL because it is not even going to work properly out of the gate and it will be shot down as soon as everyone finds out why they are being blocked or slowed down. Free speech will win the day. It is a flawed and intrusive system. They will never stand for it. Nobody should.

You kidding me. Most people will appreciate it - less porn, less warez and less malware - and of those who want that stuff most won't know what to do about getting it back. Most people remember don't use the web to download picz, moviez, gamez and warez but do it for the news, information, social networking, reference, professional use, communication and online shopping.
It'll work.

amazes me how slowly but surely 'democratic' countries are beginning to look no better than the ones they oppose. Having a "secret blacklist of banned websites" seems wrong, if it were a public debatable list it would be less dramatic. I guess no more farmers weekly ;)

Then where does the censorship end? Next thing they decide Islam is to be censored. Then any other political parties. Where does it end? You open one door of censorship and you get the whole kit and caboodle.

Filtering out the warez and pr0n is not the government's job. They are wasting tax payers money to do this on a system that is not even 100% effective. If it was me I would be mad that they were just wasting my money, never mind the censorship aspect.

Go after the child pornographer's... fine! But don't censor everything along with it under the excuse of legality. I may not agree with everything I see on the internet, but I will defend people's right to free speech. If the government does not like it, then let them use the courts... thats what they are there for.

The only reason why some democratic countries are ahead in this however, is twofold. There are enough interenet users and the government has some money to do something about censoring these users. In Africa for example, where the government officials don't have enough for their Swiss bank accounts, private planes and houses in St Tropez there is a lesser tendency to focus on such filtering. However, if things improve economically, these
govts will also switch censorship on, like CHina. :)

Agreed. It's moronic and childish and hasn't a hope of succeeding. It's just a vain govt hope of censorship and manipulation. It seems it is also likely to result in major browsing slowdowns as everything has to pass through The Great Firewall Reef!
