Australia to test Internet filter next month

This is scary! It needs to be stopped at all costs. Once this filtering has got a foothold there is no telling what sort of sensorship they can impose. Restricting information equals dumbing down the masses. Read George Orwell's 1984 and 'Animal Farm', and any of David Icke's books. The people must wake up to what the government is trying to do.

"If you really, really want to proctect your children or anyone from anything, then do it yourself, do not pass the buck to anyone else specially not a government........" PPJ

I don't think bringing Icke into your post gives it any credibility now :p

Australian Government = EPIC FAIL!

Very true. They're taking 'protection' beyond what they should.

Not just regarding the internet filter, but everything else in Australia they try and control - things that directly impact on the life of an everyday citizen.

This is just BS!!

This is Communism at its best... interesting how seemingly "democratic" governments make "communistic" decisions.

I know i might be fired for this, but i'd rather live in a 3rd world country where i can be tracked than live in a country that checks my every move...

It wont; 2 words on why:

encrypted tunnels

Did you read all my posts?

Yes, encrypted tunnels (which usually cost money - the good, fast ones anyway) will work. However, MOST people don't know about them and will be oblivious to the changes. I don't know anyone at my work outside of the IT guy who knows anything about encrypted tunnels and proxies.

You're kidding yourself.

Well most people that I know, don't use the web to download porn, warez,
moviez, mp3z, or appz. They use it to do social networking, research and
online shopping. You're talking about the minority who DL stuff from thepiratebay or other torrent sites. A good number of people who
DL stuff from these sites or P2P are college students and hs kids ie
people without jobs and a small minority of older people who are more
internet savvy and have some money. Of course the latter will be able to
use encrypted proxies but most other people don't know and don't care about
internet filtering.

Next time you're on a torrent, look how many users it has. Then compare to the total number of internet users worldwide.

Anyway I won't argue because I'm repeating myself and I believe you guys are capable of basic comprehension, if you want to say why I'm deluding myself, say so using coherent logic - unless of course you're just posting your own wishful thinking with no logical backing.

Interesting to see you backing censorship so eagerly - I thought your background was living under an oppressive regime.

You are very naive. If you have ever looked at the dns logs on a big corporate network where, experimentally, browsing restrictions were lifted, you would probably pee in your pants. Pr0n is the favourite, but others you mention get a fair representation. The people you know might not be admitting to anything, but you would be very surprised at what John & Doris Seffrican do on the net.

Then where does the censorship end? Next thing they decide Islam is to be censored. Then any other political parties. Where does it end? You open one door of censorship and you get the whole kit and caboodle.

I read about Australia's legal system and they are different to the US. In the US freedom of speech which includes everything like political speech and religious speech as well as porn (except for child pr0n) and things like
Simpsons pr0n are covered by freedom of speech. In Australia, they don't
have these rights in the bill of rights and in their view freedom of speech is
restricted to political views and religious ones but not to pornography and
and warez. Hence Australia actually censors porn on other levels, on TV, DVDs, magazines - ie other media. That's been happening. In the US they don't do that.

Filtering out the warez and pr0n is not the government's job. They are wasting tax payers money to do this on a system that is not even 100% effective. If it was me I would be mad that they were just wasting my money, never mind the censorship aspect.

I agree with you. However, most citizens are clueless. They won't even realise this is happening, and as said this has been happening on TV, video
and in magazines already. This is just an application of the same laws but
into the newest medium - internet.

Go after the child pornographer's... fine! But don't censor everything along with it under the excuse of legality. I may not agree with everything I see on the internet, but I will defend people's right to free speech. If the government does not like it, then let them use the courts... thats what they are there for
.

That's the US system. They don't see porn as part of freedom of speech. That's why they also censor things like 'Simpson's porn' and even some legal mainstream anime cartoons have been banned in OZ and NZ. They're on sale at Take2 and Amazon but in OZ they're banned. Freedom of speech works differently in different parts of the world. I think the UK will head this way too, since the OZ system is pretty much like the UK one. We've also seen the UK filter out album covers from ancient (1970s) LPs.

I do agree with you about everything you say. I don't think they should filter anything, they should just go after the cp producers. Nail them and find out who the kids are and save them, already. However, the priorities are different here, they're not there to save these particular children, they're there to just filter the web for everything the government finds undesirable and at this time that's only illegal porno and maybe hate speech but they can extend it to other things I would think.

However, I agree with you, this thing is bad and stupid and people who are savvy will just use alternative means of connecting to the web, eg secure encrypted proxies. As long as America and Europe has more freedoms, ppl will
be able to connect that way. Of course they could sign deals with those governments to make it illegal for those companies to offer services to
users or IPs from Australia.

rwenzori, do you have a comprehension issue or do you believe I have some pro-censorship bias and you read everything I say your way? Where have I been backing censorship? I've been against this thing all along. Do you understand sarcasm?

ALL I'm SAYING IS: I don't think most people are savvy enough to bypass this, in fact most people aren't savvy enough to know this is happening. Most people don't follow internet developments. They have their email and facebook page and send holiday pics to grandma. That's the majority of the internet. I'm sure it will be easy to pull the wool over these peoples' eyes,
in fact it's happened already - the law's been passed. Another fool has been found guilty of Simpson's Porn. No-one from the Supreme Court said - "Hey this is mad. Simpson's porn is not real people porn." Thought crime is in.

I'm against this censorship but unlike you I think they will get away with it because most people are like sheep -- and I don't mean that in an insulting way -- most ppl just don't know and have other things keeping their attention occupied.

So you're saying that just because it's not covered by Aus's bill of rights that it makes it OK? You'll be right at home in China/Zim etc. in that case.

I'm not saying it's OK.

I'm explaining why the US hasn't done this already but OZ is doing, because
many people here seem to follow US logic (because thus far US law has been governing peoples' use of the internet because local governments haven't been as interfering before.)

There is a fundamental difference between the French based US constitution and their legal system and the British based one.

This is one more reason to LOVE the US of A. They're actually more sensible about this.

Maybe I didn't get your sarcasm. You seemed to be fairly happy with what the Oz are doing in posts like:

Most people will appreciate it - less porn, less warez and less malware - and of those who want that stuff most won't know what to do about getting it back. Most people remember don't use the web to download picz, moviez, gamez and warez but do it for the news, information, social networking, reference, professional use, communication and online shopping.
It'll work.

But also because of your support for McCarthyism:

McCarthyism wasn't bad IMO.

A movement directly opposed to free speech.

The US Constitution (of 1787) was based on the French one of 1791?

LOL, you're right they're not based directly but the French principles were included in the US constitution, were they not? :)

The French ideology of Rosseau, Voltaire and others in the form of the Enlightment influenced the founding fathers of the US
to fund a constitutional republic.

The Ozzies did not have this.

Most Germans were happy with Hitler when he became the Fuhrer. Does that mean I support Hitler now?

But also because of your support for McCarthyism:

It had its good points too. Wasn't that around the time when the US lost the nuclear advantage because of a group of people who gave the bomb secrets to Stalin. Times were different then. People demonise everything now but I haven't read up too much on McCarthyism but it was a counterpoint to the Soviet propaganda and intelligence offensive.

I think it went more than that. It wasn't about mere freedom of speech.
Arguably they helped get rid of many Soviet Communist-Party proxies in the US. The Soviet Union was very active in America.
Overall it was a bad thing, but as said the world was different then. Bombing cities was a bad thing too but it was done and
closed the war faster. Hindsight is always 20/20 but revisionist history is also imperfect.

Yeah riiiiiight!! As long as we know where you stand on oppression of basic human rights.

Do you actually know anything about McCathyism rw? This is offtopic but it appears you're just throwing buzzwords around.

A person's views are shaped by his whole upbringing. Mine was in a place where you couldn't even say anything remotely bad about
the First Secretary or the cop would break your jaw on the spot. Seems I've seen both sides of the fence, you only have an academic
and possibly biased view of the world the US was trying to defend itself against. Sure the defence was overdone but that happens
throughout history and those times are long over. I've seen the bigger evil and so I don't really cry about McCarthy. Don't see
you crying about the hell I had to go through - which was 1000x worse than McCarthy. See how biased you are???

I've been fixing PCs part time for years and disagree, yes they do that but the average user will also infect their PC with trojans trying to download free music, porn or not wanting to pay for another norton subscription.

Only the rich/privileged are not interested in getting things for free by visiting these 'illegal' sites.

When in a corner, insult rwenzori. Becoming a habit of yours. ROFL! :p:p:D:D

PS stop editing your posts after I reply! Yes I do.

It's not an insult. They are simplistic because you took them out of context.
You can't take the height of the cold war, where the SU had a numerical advantage in Europe and America was on the defensive, had just lost the nuclear bomb to espionage - you can't take all that out. Your views are simplistic, that's not an insult it's just fact. If you don't understand that, I can't help you.

Definately not in a corner here. You're just derailing this thread making it personal. We were discussing Australia, you're the one who made it about
me. LOL.
