Auto Stop-Start: Enable/Disable?

SS button location on the new RS3 Sedan:

(of course the RS3 Sportback or any current gen A3 has it there as well)
 
The most annoying thing about these SS buttons, is you have to re-press them each time you start the car. At least the ones I've experienced.

BMW goes one better: even if you manually turned it off, it will turn back on again if you simply change the drive mode to Eco Pro.

This means my ignition protocol is something like this:

Start car -> Disable Auto Stop/Start -> Car in Eco Pro Mode -> Put Transmission into Drive -> *curse self for forgetting* -> Disable Auto Stop/Start again -> Drive off

Makes perfect sense to me that the eco functions would activate with the...erm...eco mode.

If you don’t want economy...don’t use eco?

I find the Eco mode notion of feeling like it’s pushing the throttle back and slapping you across the fingers with a ruler like an old widow high school teacher far more irritating than the stop/start action.

I like Eco's other functions, like smoothing throttle response for fuel efficiency and adjusting the aircon.

Taking Auto Stop/Start back on even if I've just manually turned it off seconds ago ... that's just an every day annoyance lol.

How does it adjust the aircon?

Modern air cons are already so efficient can’t imagine it can do much?

Also I think you should stop switching it off and just learn to live with it. Will be much less annoying.

It does some germany magic stuff with the aircon.

I just keep mine in comfort now, I keep on getting notified to stop driving so hard in eco pro mode from Idrive lol
 
The other morning half way down the road went to switch off the SS and I switched the bloody car off.

LOL, I often wondered if that was possible. Might be dangerous if it happens while the car is rolling, right? If it shuts down the power steering, might get fun.

The car was rolling, it just died then beeped then some message and diagram of the car came on the screen.
 
Ok, so just as a change to FiestaST's posting of photos of the infamous button, I decided to do a live test of something somebody described here: pressing the car's ignition button instead of the disable S/Sbutton (well done BMW on deciding to put those two right next to each other behind the damn steering wheel where you can't even see them).

No animals were harmed during this test (myself included): I did it at 10km/h in my parking lot at home.

The result: prodding the car's ignition button quickly while the car is in motion does nothing (at least in my BMW F30 320i). A quick press is all it takes to disable the S/S, but the car just ignored the same on the ignition button while it was in motion. Not to be deterred I then tried pressing in the ignition and holding it in ... and sure enough at around two or three seconds the engine turned off.

At this point my car was very unhappy with me and warned me that the car was still in motion in D mode although the engine was off. As soon as I hit the brake, the car automatically shifted into P mode (which jerked the car to a stop). Restarting was easy: I just had to hold down the brake, shift back into drive and continue like usual.

And there you have it. If this was a fear keeping you up at night, fear not (but probably just test it first in a parking lot) :)

I am somebody!

That's strange that yours didn't switch off or is that strange that mine did???? The button is stupidly in the line of sight of the steering wheel.

Maybe you just need to stop pressing buttons so slowly :P I recommend practicing quick jabs.
