Autobahn speed limit decision

But thats the previous governments fault right? They taught they only had to cater for so many people.
A valid excuse...12 years ago.

How long will they use this excuse?

That is something with which I disagree. You should be able to cross whenever and wherever you like and should be trained/practiced in doing so. Of course people need to be taught to apply common sense - there are roads where it is not feasible to get across without the assistance of a light.

We're so used to hide and excuse our violations by saying " no harm, no foul" ... how many parents havent you seen driving around with no seatbelts on, talking on the cell, skipping 4 ways or robots after its turned red ... or sometimes all of the above. When last have you seen someone stop and give right of way to pedestrians on the side of the road at a zebra crossing? Let alone treat a faulty robot as a 4 way stop... mainstream just keeps going. Kids learn to drive by watching their parents.

How do we expect " the government must stop crime and implement road safety" to become a reality when none of us could be arsed with bringing our own little part.

The WORST part is if you try and point out someone's mistake to them on the road, they flip out completely and verbally abuse you or worse...

If you look at it blindly, yes, they may not have invisioned the number of trucks/etc that we are faced with today... however, back then most inter-provincial cargo was transported by train. How many trains still run today? Does Transnet & Spoornet even still exist? The system catered for proper taffic flow for the next 20years, as is the norm, but they didnt count on the collapse of the rail system. The new government also didnt invisage the sudden influx of all those citizens suddenly being allowed to drive around freely.

So now the newbies find themselves adding lanes and so fort...
Do you think we need new roads?

We need smarter road management. Bus lanes, time restraint lanes *i.e. prohibiting usage for trucks during peak traffic etc.* and the list goes on, but managing it is a white elephant.

Ye potholes are bad but thats just the affiliate companies that stuff up knowing that they gonna be called as soon as the holes open again... thats a admin problem and should be fixed.

Sure many companies make a botch up of it, but the problem remains with maintenance. Alot of old school contractors who know how to build excellent roads are being used to build these new roads... but even the best quality roads need preventative maintenance, rather than repair oriented maintenance ... and the BEE firm which is run by a group of accountants, receives these maintenance contracts. They're excellent accountants, but know nothing of maintaining roads or preventing road deterioration*sp* ... which is fine, because they'll just get paid to come back and "fix" it.

...but hey, what do i know ?

I'm opposed to seatbelt laws for adults unless it can be demonstrated that they do anything for the average driver other than add to their own safety. Otherwise I fully agree adults ignoring seatbelt laws, motorcycle helmet laws and bicycle helmet laws.

When last have you seen someone stop and give right of way to pedestrians on the side of the road at a zebra crossing?
Yesterday. For the person in front of me, and then me when I reached the crossing.

The reasons why this happened don't really matter now, although none of the above happened overnight. More important is whether the problem is recognised and a plan is in place to fix it. Britain allowed its water system to decay to the point where water supply in some areas was seriously degraded and this was made worse by the government then privatising the supply with the private company deciding it wasn't profitable to fix everything right away, so the government just passed the buck. Britain's rail system was put into private hands who then cut safety corners.

That's inadequate driver training. Bizarrely most motorists have no idea that a faulty or flashing red light is to be treated as a four-way stop. Local drivers complete inability to deal with four-way stops is the next problem.

and the BEE firm which is run by a group of accountants, receives these maintenance contracts.
Which company is that?

But what really is the big deal with people learning to intelligently cross roads instead of standing at a light like sheep waiting for the slaughter? When I was in France it seemed everyone just crossed the road wherever they felt like it, taking the cars into account obviously.

You have never been to Germany, have you?

Roads in the middle east trump any German 'autobahns'. You have 4-5 lanes one way going straight as an arrow. Autobahn is overloaded and crowded and just frankly OVERRATED. Also the type of cars you see these rich Arabs drive put all 'autobahn' users to shame.

I read my post over and over. No. Still don't see anything about the Autobahn. Oh hang on, maybe that's because I was pointing out that German roads are ALL better than any South African roads. Period.

Not at you .... :) Nothing beats a HUMVEE (not Hummer) on an Emirates highway. :)

Whatever tickles your fancy and keep your fanny dry ol mate! BTW the heading referred to the Autobahn, were you ever in Germany physically or are you riding the Google-bahn?

I doubt he can see your reply.

His stupidity, if he wants to be a pi$$y for no reason and read incoherent threads. You get these old a$$es that do not know night by day and block people for their own stupidities posted!

Been to Germany kiddo. Not impressed by the reality. Sorry.
Have you been to the ME? You should go but with speed cameras
every few km, you need to really time yourself.
Germany is a far sight better in terms of infrastructure than SA - both for public transport and road networks. Been to Dubai and well, they know how to build, that's for sure. I would actually go as far as to say that the Dubaians are so far the construction gods of the 21st Century.

hehe i agree with you, however quite ironic that the massive 7 star hotel shaped like a sailboat (forgot the name now) was built by a joint venture with Murray & Roberts (SA firm)

:D

Long live the Autobahn!

The autobahn could teach the bright sparks at DPLG what it truly means to be out of the 3rd world

ah yes... the wonderful autobahn...

... probably one of the few really good things Adolf Hitler managed to create during his ruling era.

Not too sure what that was about, but ok. Apparently i lost.
