Am I being optimistic to think I will get a reliable automatic vehicle for under R60K in Gauteng? Did hunting online, but too scared of scammers...

Nissan Almera.

Dull as a dishwasher but super reliable. Well within your budget.

That's a good one, I'd also look at other Nissan models and see what crops up, you may get a Tiida around that price.

Clio 3 1.6 auto should also be around your price bracket.
Or if you are more adventurous, a Alfa 147 Selespeed.

//Flame jacket on :p

Of course you can, it's the rest of the parameters that are the problem.

Age, Mileage etc.

Gonna hi jack this thread.
Moving to JHB soon, with a budget of 80 to 100k.

What good cars are in that range, has to be automatic.

There are lots of cars... Just do a search on Auto Trader and narrow them down to what you want.

Why do you specifically want an auto?

Jhb traffic doesn't look friendly for a manual car..

If it was manual I'd aim for a Figo, i20, Jazz but being an automatic, I don't know which ones are reliable.

Dude, I've been driving in JHB traffic with a manual for over six years, no hassles. Trust me, if you're moving up to JHB the last thing you want is to be worried about your old high-mileage car's auto transmission packing up. Rather get the best car you can afford, and treat yourself to an auto later when you can really afford it.

Then again, I guess it depends on your driving ability. There are a lot of people who honestly can't do one hill-start, never mind a bunch of them in peak traffic. If you've got basic clutch control down and know how to use your handbrake, you'll be 100% fine.

Still waying the costs of getting a car vs Uber.

Driving a manual isn't an issue.

Yeah I think that a lot too, but get a car. No chick's gonna be impressed if you say "Yeah, let's go out to KFC in my ... errr ... crumbs, I'd call an Uber if I had data remaining on my phone."
