I'm considering getting a desktop at home again, haven't had one for about 10 years.

What would a averaged spec'd one that can handle 3 screens go for?

(I won't be gaming, mostly for working with data, and "data-based" development)

You can do it with just one though if it has the right outputs.

+1

Most card's have 2 x DP, 1 x HDMI

You're going to have to find screen's that support that input.

AMD: http://www.wootware.co.za/his-hs-46...it-gddr5-pci-e-3-0-desktop-graphics-card.html
Nvidia: http://www.wootware.co.za/asus-r7240-oc-4gd3-l.html

I recommend going with the Nvidia. And buy the necessary cable adapters. The Display Cable monitors are generally high end and more expensive.

Key question: What resolution do you plan on running?

Sounds ridiculous but for my work laptop I bought a USB to VGA adapter and grabbed a spare 23" screen we had standing around (that has VGA in)

Works like a charm, make sure you get a USB3 one, not USB2

What do the adapters go for? That might be a solution. Laptop has USB3, VGA, and HDMI.

...although... having a PC I don't have to unplug might also be beneficial.

just by the way, at least on 755 on intel mobos, you can run 3 screens off the onboard display and any old gfx card that supports 2 monitors.. people in the office were mind blown one morning when they came in and saw me with 3 monitors running off a single pc with no fancy adapters or gfx cards..

I loved it! 2 large monitors next to each other with the laptop as a third screen! Then I realised I could have 3 monitors and the laptop screen.....
