AVG 2011 Update Causes Widespread Problems For 64-Bit Windows

the main issue seems to be that you are running avg, rather upgrade to something that actually works properly, i would recommend avast

AVG free is not as good as it used to be. If you want free anti-virus try Avira free edition.
Otherwise rather buy Norton 2011 which is really good.

Any word on Microsoft Security Essentials? I've been reading good things about it here and there. I'm using it on my laptop and it seems to be OK. . .for now.

I've been using MSE on my PC and laptop for the last 6 months at least, have found it to be very effective and unobtrusive, also picked up viruses that AVG allowed through in email attachments which was my main reason for switching from avg

Good bye AVG. I'm on night shift this week and you cost me many hours of sleep trying to sort out my OS.
Hello MSE, Lets be friends.

What a relief that I didn't have to reinstall.
Greg, what can I get you for xmas;)

I've been installing MSE on clients systems for a while now with no nasties to report. Haven't seen any adverse reports on ZDNet either.

For Windoze 7, MSE + Threatfire are a great combo.
Then just add virustotal windows shell extension to scan individual suspicious files as and when required (over 40 virus engines).

Greg - what release of Mame are you using on your arcade box? I think I am going to make this my end of year project. Did you get your joysticks etc. from these guys?

AVG is crap. The way it would steal the focus and minimize whatever game I was playing when it updated was what made me switch to Avast. That was utterly stupid design.
Although I guess in this case it's a good thing that you can prevent the update...

linux ftw

gonna laugh my a$$ off at the person who installed avg free on a production server/critical workstation and got flak for that :D

Nothing new, got that error a few months back. Now a proud paying customer of Bitdeffender Internet Security, a much better product than AVG.
