AVG 2011 Update Causes Widespread Problems For 64-Bit Windows

I had endless troubles with AVG giving me me a blue screen of death last year sometime in November I think when they released their new version - at the time I was using Vista home basic. I switched to avast! and have not had a problem (or a virus) since then. I have since upgraded to Windows 7 and still avast is serving me perfectly well. I don't think I will ever go back to AVG.

AVG used to slow my boot times by 90 seconds! Removed it and my boot time dropped from almost 2 mins to 30 seconds.

I'm still using a mix of AVG Free v7.0, v8.5 and v9.0 on my PCs. They are just there as a last resort safety net. I prefer Common sense v1.0 though.

In other news, my friend upgraded to AVG 2011, turned off all online features and updates ... then lost over 250MB of his Vodacom databundle during the week. Netlimiter blamed AVG! Dunno wth it was/is doing?!

I really like MSE. Just does its job and stays out of your face.

I like how they give you the fix for the problem and say then you can re-install AVG after that. You know you're an idiot if you re-install it for real.

I've been using MSE on my PC and laptop for the last 6 months at least, have found it to be very effective and unobtrusive, also picked up viruses that AVG allowed through in email attachments which was my main reason for switching from avg

MSSE is great, very good - we use it on ALL our clients' machines if they are not already using a commercial version.

running win 7 64bit with avast and MSE... funny when they both try to scan a usb drive and catch eatch other :)

Greg - what release of Mame are you using on your arcade box? I think I am going to make this my end of year project. Did you get your joysticks etc. from these guys?

Going a bit off topic here but I used version 0.138 with hyper spin. Ordered my joysticks from ultimarc. Not cheap but they the best you get. Got the ultrastick.

Back OT.

Why in blue blazes would you run 2 av packages at the same time?

Use Linux! Alternatively use Avira or MSE as they are the only ones that cut it in the FREE department!

AVG went down after AVG 8, I am really happy with ESET now
AVG free is not as good as it used to be. If you want free anti-virus try Avira free edition.
Otherwise rather buy Norton 2011 which is really good.
LOL what are you smoking? even currant AVG is still better then that crap.

linux ftw

gonna laugh my a$$ off at the person who installed avg free on a production server/critical workstation and got flak for that :D

AVG free doesn't run on Server editions... and a Server is unlikely to be restarting anyway. So I doubt many will be effected, except on the critical workstation side... and that is if they restarted. But I guess a few did. :-)
