I used to install AVG Free Edition for family and friends, but now I'm just using Microsoft Security Essentials. There is a dedicated thread for MSE.

Ja, AVG is OK... but the updates are huuuuge. Switch to Microsoft Security Essentials. You won't be disappointed.

where does it store the updates for AVG...as for example i want to install AVG on another pc, but i don't want to go through the hassle of updating, and basically just install and copy "updates"
50MB is a bunch! How do you know this? I wonder what Avast does in a month...

You can't... you need to download the redistributable version from their website.

Some of us are not so well off as you are. I can only afford 500MB PM as I have kids to feed and put through schooling. The kids use most of it for projects and leave me some to complain about stuff here.

AVG is good, but MSE is the best IMO.
AVG only ever does small updates (I've never seen it do huge updates)
But once a month I download the entire installer again (80MB) and use that when going to clients, so at least I have as many of the updates included so updates (on site) are small.
Having said that, where possible I use MSE.

Well tbh 50meg isn't a lot these days... What you can do to save a but is to disable automatic updates. Do updates manually and be sure to not install the program updates just the virus definition updates as those are the important ones. The program updates are the huge ones usually.
