Hi

Hope someone can help me out as im not that tech savvy and know what I want but just not sure how to put it together.

We are moving back to SA, and we not that keen on a tv licence or dstv costs etc. We stream everything we need online for free, live sport, news, tv, movies etc.

What I would like to do is have a nice set up in SA, as we just using a laptop at the moment.

The easy option is just to have a big as lcd or similar tv put you need to have a TV licence if you receive a TV signal. Considering we wont even be watching SABC I don't see the point.

So what im looking for is a computer monitor or similar without the benefit of receiving a tv signal.

But computer monitors are not that big, the biggest I can find is 30' unless I missed some searching online?

The other option would be a projector or similar? Is that feasible?

Basically, what im looking for is a nice decent (BIG) size viewing surface, something like the below pictures.

Any thoughts?

I don't have any local TV or DSTV and I still pay the license every year because it's too much effort to cancel.

Hi

No, im not stingy and its not going to bankrupt me at all, but I don't see the point in paying for something we will not use

Im just asking for advice on a good option for a viewing platform?

You sometimes get TV's that do not have a tuner built in. For example, I have a 42" Sony plasma display that does not have a tuner, so you would not need a TV Licence for that.

But I don't know if something like that is still available. Mine is a few years old, and is only HD ready, not Full HD.

Commercial displays like Samsung LFD's don't have tuners but they tend to cost more. P-Vision commercial displays are assembled locally and will be cheaper. LG also has a range.

You still have to pay for a TV licence whether your TV is working or not!

Just pay the license, it's the "right" thing to do... in this case cos it just easier.

This is something that really gets to bite me in the ass, people will do anything to avoid paying the little things, even on the legal side.

In terms of the Broadcasting Act, No 4 of 1999, as amended, any person or entity that has in its possession and/or uses a TV set. A licence remains payable, irrespective of whether a television set in one's possession is used or not.

I know that this are going to be revised to include all screen sets (also including (PC) monitors), since it is not clear to the user in regard with the tuner or the planned usage. These very same licencing are also applicable to our radio broadcasting, though we do pay a licence to own a radio, as this is the most basic broadcasting media to cover the vast population.

The act puts a television set like this:

Any device designed or adapted to be capable of receiving a broadcast television signal. That includes a PC fitted with a TV tuner card, or a videocassette recorder (VCR) connected to a monitor or TV screen.

I know that the above has already been amended with broader terms, also to include updated and new devices.

I agree with you if you do not have to pay a TV licence why should you .
Seems people did not read you post properly or are just trolls .

I recommend running a PC with software that streams internet video to a console or media player (playstation and Xbox do the job well - you can also get TV's that will play streams themselves, like some Sony's)

Useful information here: http://licencefree.info/

Also, some online stores don't require you to have a tv license to buy one, if I'm not mistaken.

This is one of those things that people don't pay, but will never admit to, for reasons I can't understand. Perhaps they choose to take the moral high ground over sensibility.

With the shenanigans going on at the SABC for the last 5 years, the massive corruption and theft, and being the official mouthpiece of the cANCer, I don't see how anyone can justify paying it, as little as it may be. Truth be told, the majority of TV owners are not paying TV licenses. The irony is that the few that are paying, probably don't vote for the cANCer either, while the rest that do, don't pay a cent. It' a typical case of cANCer-opponents funding the party unknowingly.

It's the same thing with e-tolls, though the difference is that there is massive public support against it, due to the huge implications it will have on the cost of living.

Anyway, I suggest you simply find some place that will sell you the TV without requiring the license. I've even seen that salespeople in some stores are willing to borrow you their own licenses (or some license obtained from who knows where) in order to close the deal. Or bring a TV with you from overseas.

TV licenses are a big farce.

Glad he was banned. We don't need people like him coming here with their criminal tendencies.

I will send this thread to the relevant authorities and hopefully they can trace him down and not allow him to enter our country.
