Avoiding TV Licence, DSTV costs etc

This is one of those things that people don't pay, but will never admit to, for reasons I can't understand. Perhaps they choose to take the moral high ground over sensibility.

With the shenanigans going on at the SABC for the last 5 years, the massive corruption and theft, and being the official mouthpiece of the cANCer, I don't see how anyone can justify paying it, as little as it may be. Truth be told, the majority of TV owners are not paying TV licenses. The irony is that the few that are paying, probably don't vote for the cANCer either, while the rest that do, don't pay a cent. It' a typical case of cANCer-opponents funding the party unknowingly.

It's the same thing with e-tolls, though the difference is that there is massive public support against it, due to the huge implications it will have on the cost of living.

Anyway, I suggest you simply find some place that will sell you the TV without requiring the license. I've even seen that salespeople in some stores are willing to borrow you their own licenses (or some license obtained from who knows where) in order to close the deal. Or bring a TV with you from overseas.

TV licenses are a big farce.

You will also be reported, criminal.

Glad he was banned.

Did I miss something ? Why was he banned ?

This was a perfectly reasonable request, you do not need a TV Licence if you do not own a TV set with a tuner !

Watching video on a display without a tuner is perfectly legitimate !

Yeah, why exactly was I banned? I asked a simple question about a monitor??

The douche-bag that wants to report me to to the authorities, exactly what do you want to report me for? For asking about a monitor?

We just built a self-efficient house, ie minimal electricity use, water usage etc....Do you want to report me to Eskom as well? You are a retard, I have no time for keyboard warriors.

Thank you for the sensible replies to my original query, the mercer monitor seems like a good option worth exploring

Cheers

Still no explanation as to why the OP was banned ?

Or is there a deleted post that we cannot see ?

IIRC there was a post with a link to a site encouraging people not to pay their UK TV licence and a rant about the BBC (the site was ranting not the OP).

I pay a stupid TV licence, yet I don't have an aerial for accepting any signal. It's just another useless tax we have to pay for the fat cats. I'd rather die then watch sabc or e or dstv for that matter.

I don't have any local TV or DSTV and I still pay the license every year because it's too much effort to cancel.

You need to be dead to get that right - I tried to do it when my Dad left for the States and we did not expect him to come back. It was impossible to do it so I just kept on paying it until he came back to SA.

Since I've moved into my new house 10 weeks ago, we have not watched any broadcast TV has I've been too lazy to go get a 2m fly-lead to connect the TV to the exiting aerial. We have not missed it one bit so much so that I'm now tempted to take down the aerial and DSTV dish the seller had installed.

Until streaming TV is available in SA, we continue to grow our DVD library (over 150 movies) and watch Youtube on my PS3. Was watching some nice documentaries on Youtube last week.

I am missing here one important (?) consideration:
How much will it cost you to stream all those GB in an adequate way/speed (here in SA)???
In my case, we are living on a farm, and I am paying 1000 bucks per month to our WISP, for a meagre 15GB at a theoritical max. speed of 2mb/s (yeah yeah, I am dreaming).
Stream a movie or sports? Laughable.
So the only option is satellite TV :-(

One last thought: Although it doesn't make sense, I bet that a "TV"/display without tuner will cost you a lot more than a comparable one with one (or more) tuners. So it makes a lot of economic sense to rather pay for a TV license.
Which reminds me:
The first time I bought a TV in SA, I must have accidentally mispelled our details or mixed up the name fields with the address fields.
Never ever received a renewal letter or any other communication! That saved me time which I can now use to post threads ;-)

2 years ago since the last post, ja but still.

I also have just arrived in SA, with no intention to pay my license.

Nothing to do with the cost. Yes the cost is cheap, and won't bankrupt me, HOWEVER it's stopping paying that's the issue, I've heard stories of the SABC hounding people for their licenses , who have been 6 feet under for 30 years.

Well, calculate it. (per hour rates)
240p ~ 150 MB
360p ~ 250 MB
480p ~ 400 MB
720p ~ 800-900 MB
1080p ~ 1.2 -1.4 GB

I am assuming he wants HD, so average about 1GB per day? I am assuming 2/3 hours per day. 3GB x 30 = 90GB / month.
Capped accounts (only looking at bundles and only anytime):
Afrihost: Afrihost 50GB+50GB+10Mbps line = R578.

Capped:
Crystalweb: 120GB(R395) + 10Mbps line (R425) = R820
-> note that you could also get a Vox 20Mbps ADSL Line @ R410

Uncapped (bundled):
CrystalWeb: Home premium 10Mbps: R1174

EDIT: Sorry, it's a necro. Didn't check the date. Thank you poster above me :p

Just pay the license, it's the "right" thing to do... in this case cos it just easier.

This.

These cretins at SABC will not listen to you not needing their pos channels.

They survive by tvs coming tuners irrespective of whether you stream/dl everything or not.

Only option is to buy a second hand tv that doesn't require you to register for a licence. But ita better just pay the fukers

I bought a TV from takealot this year, although we have a TV licence at home. It didn't prompt me to enter one.

Hi

Hope someone can help me out as im not that tech savvy and know what I want but just not sure how to put it together.

We are moving back to SA, and we not that keen on a tv licence or dstv costs etc. We stream everything we need online for free, live sport, news, tv, movies etc.

What I would like to do is have a nice set up in SA, as we just using a laptop at the moment.

The easy option is just to have a big as lcd or similar tv put you need to have a TV licence if you receive a TV signal. Considering we wont even be watching SABC I don't see the point.

So what im looking for is a computer monitor or similar without the benefit of receiving a tv signal.

But computer monitors are not that big, the biggest I can find is 30' unless I missed some searching online?

The other option would be a projector or similar? Is that feasible?

Basically, what im looking for is a nice decent (BIG) size viewing surface, something like the below pictures.

Any thoughts?

Go to www.bidorbuy.co.za and buy a tv from one of the sellers.
I have not seen one seller ask for proof off tv licence.
