if all you are using over wireless is internet and gaming, then wireless is fine. Only part i dont enjoy is copying media, wireless is soo slow...

for me wired is the only route...

That suprises me, i only bought with the intention of it being saix based.. i will check the details of my connection tonight... Their website is very ambiguous if thats the case...

So for gaming, there is no difference between wired and wireless? Also, could someone please post links to local sites where I can a router that you recommend (product specific pages please).

there is a big difference between Wireless internet gaming and hardwired internet gaming, but no real difference if your local network is wired or wireless...

Try computer mania or something, i cant think of anybody else... only ever buy from suppliers..

So if I have a wireless network at home, but through an ADSL line (the 626) I'll be fine?

So my mind is made up:
1. Buy Netgear wireless router. Still not sure of the model, because I hear that the DG834G is better than the DG834 for wireless.
2. 626 account. Probably start on pre-paid 2 gig, and see how it goes. Top up a few times, and be set for the year.
3. XBLive gold account here I come!
 
I just bought a pre-paid gig of this last night ...and it works great, just as good latencies as on any SAIX unshaped or IS semi-shaped.

But what I don't get is "where's the catch?" It's unshapped bandwidth going for cheaper than any shaped bandwidth you can get (afaik). Sure you can't use it outside the 6pm to 6am timeframe, but just use another account for those times. What am I missing here?

yup its cheaper because of the times you can use it...

Oh, no doubt less is used after-hours, but but but, if a GB is a GB, what possible difference could there be in the cost (I'm talking cost to the ISP)? For arguments sake the ISP buy's 100GB at R50 p/GB, it'll cost them the same no matter what time it gets used, right?

Unless off-peak data is sold cheaper than peak data, it just doesn't make sense in my head :P Would also explain why Cybersmart can do that nightrider thing perhaps.

Hell, to me the idea of charging for data at all on an always-on line is bizarre. So trying to understand why traffic at a particular point in timeaffects cost of data is beyond the scope of this course.

yeah unfortunately the ISPS arent that transparent in terms of how they calculate their rates... Look at it in the same instance as calling times, callmore etc.. same thing..

Is there a cost difference on 626 between getting a 4meg and a 384k line?
Also, do I have to pay line rental to Telkom seperately?

Quick question, are you doing any local downloading (nzb/torrents) with this account or using another account for that?
