Somehow I don't think this is related to his problem.

There is a difference between contention and port shaping. If slow speed is caused by high contention ratios, all the "unshaping" in the world won't make it better.

Wait, the guy that determined their contention ratio is probably the same dude that worked out the 99c per GB download rate ....

>> 890 Gigs at R899 = 99cents per GB

it is related to the problem i asked axxess btw

And you believe them why???

Every time I call them about the INSANELY slow speeds on my 4MBit line (during business hours I can barely even browse a site including this one - I'm not on the lite package btw...), there's some dumb excuse about a problem at IS or some related crap! Instead of just coming clean and saying their product/s are rubbish!! I switch to my backup ISP and magic happens...I get normal speeds again and can actually use my connection.

well i dont notice speed drops on my axxess lite just latency and seems to be running perfect today

and what is your backup ISP saix?

This is what I get on on a 4 Mbit/s line with my Axxess ADSL Pro capped account (yes I still have one). Couple this with all the complaints about Afrihost, and the common thread is IS. There is obviously a major problem there.

I've tried restarting my router, changing to my Afrihost capped account - nothing helps.

This is a semi shaped product same as afrihost capped accounts.

Its just oversold that's why the speeds are slow. The contention ratio may even be as high as the uncapped accounts. This is the only reason why they are sold so cheap.

Well all I can say is, this is product is absolute rubbish for online gaming.

Thanks Axxess for disappointing me for the first time in a year's subscription.

Let me add my 5c if I may..

I have a 4mb ADSL connection as well and have mainly 2 ISP accounts to connect to the net and play my online games with. (Telkom DO 3 package and AXXESS Lite unshaped).

From about 08:00 in the morning to about 18:00 in the evening when port shaping is in place I have an average latency of 20 - 40ms on any of these two ISP accounts. Now arround these times mentioned above I can play my games without any problems and also do any downloads I nead without speed drops. The problem starts at 18:00 in the evening when my latency drops to anywhere between 150 - 300ms when port shaping is disabled and all accounts go unshaped (hint: torrent downloads kicks in and the network is sucked dry).

After an extensive investigation it was found that the exchange my ADSL service works from has a DSLAM that is so over sold and over utillised that all services working from it experiences this latency and low download speeds.

So I guesse my point is that it is not always the ISP that is to blame for latency but the company basically all of us get our ADSL services from, you guessed it Telkom. BAD NETWORK PLANNING AND NOT ENOUGH SPECTRUM TO PROVIDE ALL CLIENTS WITH OPTIMUM SERVICE.

How do you know that the exchange is that busy? Do you know which exchange you work? Let me know via PM I should be able to tell you if you have the same problem that I have.

well by judging from what telkom said, but they could be lying

i only know dslam i'm on not exchange
Pietermaritzburg
umc 2 howick road

also would expect it to be worse during day since businesses use the main exchange in PMB

If you used the unshaped service you should not have a problem during business hours but only after 18:00 at night when all goes unshaped. The Howick dslam will most propable not have a overutilisation issue but you never know..Give me some time and I will let you know.
