You don't necessarily have to get VDSL. It has very limited coverage but you might be connected to one of the latest dslams or IMAX exchanges which supports 20Mbps adsl2+

It almost just as good with a slightly slower upload speed but download speeds are the same.

What about the latency differences between ADSL 2+ and VDSL?
If your exchange supports VDSL upto 40Mbit then do Telkom give you the choice of ADSL 2+ or VDSL?
How does that one work?

Latency might drop a few ms but nothing noticeable.

For 20Mbps lines they might give an option of ADSL or VDSL, 40Mbps is VDSL only.

I'd personally prefer VDSL over ADSL 2+ for 20Mbit.
Guess I shall have to wait and see.

Same, the upload on Telkom VDSL 20Mbps is 2Mbps and on 40Mbps it is 3Mbps which is much better than the 1Mbps max you will get on ADSL

I wonder how stability differs between VDSL vs ADSL 2+ for 20Mbit at the same distance?
Whether one might be more stable than the other?

VDSL should be more stable unless you are right on the edge of getting 20Mb then ADSL might be a bit more stable
