Axxess/SAIX News Server

Hmm. I tell you what, at R190 for 10GB and not having to worry about whether stuff is cached or not, it sounds extremely appealing to me.

And is IS uncached 10kB/s for all users no matter your line speed?

Yeah.. more like 6-8kb/s avg
 
that's certainly what i get on average for uncached. If it was a reasonable fraction of line speed I would not be too despondent.
 
i was thinking about this and seems all good but

19 bucks a gig 10 gig 190 bucks

30 gig from openweb 139 and i still buy another 10 gig to get through the month

40 gig local only 210 bucks and i use 30 gigs on the IS news server

now 30 gig on this news server the saix one would around 570

not a logical investement, i dont mind the 800megs i download on uncache a day, its alot cheaper

i dont mind 6-8k i still get what i want throughout the month and 30 gig is alot of stuff

also alot of the stuff you can post on newshost and it gets cached which means full speed

normally my 30 gig is done by the 20th which is not bad i dont think
 
Some furhter questions for clarity:

1. I can access this news server using a WA local account?
2. Can I only acces it via a newsreader? It seems that pointing my browser to news.axxess.co.za or news.saix.net (using a IS local account) results in a connection timed out. Is this because of the IS account?
3. Does it have a Newshost type site where one can just get nzb's?

Yip, it's been said in this thread already ;)

Get grabit, it's free, www.shemes.com add the news server and don't add a user name and password, import the nzb and voila

3. Does it have a Newshost type site where one can just get nzb's?

Many millenia ago there was no such thing as newshost, but if you choose to, you could download any or all nzb's located @ newshost with your SAIX account, nzb is an nzb, it's the same no matter who your provider is.

If you could find something that's about 120 days to 200 days old, you can download it, some good search engines are www.newzleech.com and www.binshearch.info

No man guys.....only 4 pages in this thread and this SAIX news server which was giving me an average of 415k a sec last night is now down to 150k per sec average. Word travels fast :D lol. Anyone else care to report their experience so far with it? Im using WebAfrica Local btw.

Nice to be back on the forum after a long absence.

it's more a case of my wording what i wanted to know badly. so as long as i have an nzb i can point it in the direction of the SAIX news server and all will be good. Thanks for the info.
 
If only SIAX local was priced around I.S Local :rolleyes:.. .This surely would be a winner!

WA offer both IS and SAIX local, so it depends which one you have. Sounds like you have IS, so no, only SAIX accounts can access the SAIX newsserver, same for the IS one.

Well it's because of the IS account that you can't connect to the server, but I don't think there would be a web page for it in any case.

Seeing as it mirrors giganews you can just use the big international NBZ sites, I think that was mentioned earlier.
 
You guys are forgetting that IS used to be Full speed as well when most people thought a news server was CNN etc, Everything was fast. But as more people use the service the sheer volume of bandwidth will force them to lower the speed.

The IS server still works out much cheaper, I spend about 2xR130 for 60 Gigs which lasts until about the 26th. My 7Gb International 23 Gb Local acc handles the rest. Downloading from the Local SAIX server at R19.00 a gig x 60 = R1140.00 vs R260.00.... No contest

Well, this is why I'm hoping there won't be any sheer volume to make them slow down. I don't mind paying the premium seeing as I'd run out of thing I actually WANT (keyword, I'd still download, just because) to download after a month or two or on a 30GB cap.

Also, SAIX has a lot more banwidth and money to support the newsserver than IS. They have been hosting many local FTP servers and gaming servers for a long time now.
