All the options have insurance, or at least EMS, FedEX, UPS have. The Airmail option also should have insurance - it will take them some time to claim for the USPS ones but they should send the replacement order out first wait for reimbursement from USPS afterward.

Disappointing... :(

I've spoken to someone at JHB and Durban today about my order and they were both very helpful. The chap in Durban explained to me why I was seeing my parcel as being in JHB already when in fact it is still in Germany... Apparently they forward the documentation through ahead of the parcel for pre-clearance at customs. The parcel itself is only due to arrive in the country tomorrow.

It's only lenses that are only eligible for VAT charges.

There are also duties payable on camera bodies (7% ?) - and the vat is on top of this.

i dont really know how customs over here will deal with the camera.. should i expect to pay 1550*1.1*1.14 and thus $1943? i was wondering because surely the original amount contains US VAT which i dont have to pay it would cross out with SA VAT and therefore = 1550*1.1 = $1705. so its $1943 vs $1705 depending on how it works, and that pretty much makes or breaks the deal for me. The other thing I was wondering is whether the warantee will be global or only effective in the USA.
could anyone clear this up for me? I didnt find it necessary to start a new thread..

There is no VAT in the US, its sales tax and as it varies from state to state they always omit it on prices.

Canon bodies only carry local warranties, the lenses international.

Camera bodies incur Duties as well as VAT, I'm not sure of the actual rate though.
 
Duties on camera bodies is 7% plus VAT on 110% of the value.
You add the duties first and then the vat cause the tax man charges vat on the total with the duties.
 
Another update on my package:

UPS tell me that it's in JHB, cleared by customs, and due to be delivered to my door in Durban tomorrow. If this turns out to be true, then I am INCREDIBLY impressed with UPS for being able to get my parcel to me so quickly! Ordered on Monday, delivery Friday! That's insane!

Curiously though, UPS have given me the amount owing for duties. It looks like they have charged VAT only, and unfortunately on the value of the shipment as a whole. No breakdown between the vertical grip, lens, and battery. Just one lump sum. It's about what I expected all in all though, so happy.
 
most international parcels are delivered with 3-5 days so not really insane.
bottom line, overall cost with shipping and vat, clearing paid did you save much, if anything?

Ordered the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 L. R9,699 at SA Camera and Orms (ex shipping). I got it for R8,170 all in, to my door.

nope, I think you miscalculated, or you haven't been charged vat?
BH is $944, shipping is $97 with duties and clearing I work out you would have paid about R8900 - still cheaper than orms though, so probably worth it.
 
Lol, there is no miscalculation. No duties were charged, just VAT. Total damage to my wallet, R8,170.

za1, postage was split with a friend of mine. The parcel included his battery grip and spare battery as well.

They're a courier. This is their basic work - your item should be in your hands by Friday if dispatched on Monday. The customs is pre-cleared anyway.
 
It's en-route. Spoke to the driver this morning to give him directions. Taking his time though, was hoping to get to play around at lunchtime! :(
