B&H Photo Video Purchasing Limit?

If this is because you now own all the equipment you will ever need, that's great. OTOH if a rift has developed between us, I'd like to repair it.
Oh, I'll never have enough gear. I had to deal with a real bozo online and it really ground my gears. I'm not going to go around badmouthing B&H but I'm not holding them to the same exalted position I used to. Time is supposed to heal all wounds, or so they say. ;)

Yup I bought a ton of stuff too, over the last few years.

And today B&H sent me another catalog in the snail mail.
I though that was what I saw yesterday - before the missus ran off and hid it! :D

I believe bwana had a bad experience of sorts with B&H if I recall correctly and if not mistake he is from NY.
You're not. :)

I've also received the snail mail catalog. I echo a free shipping discount. Perhaps instead of the catalog. I'm more likely to spend money and buy more gear if I know I'm getting a discount on shipping, than looking at an item in the catalog and then thinking cool lemme go buy that.

Anyone bought a computer from them?
I wonder what the duties/shipping would be on a laptop?
Anyone?
Thanks

They can't ship Apple. They don't do Panasonic (AFAIK) and for Sony Vaio I'd rather order direct from Japan (domestic models usually better than export variety).

I was thinking of Acer or Asus, but could look at Sony.. if you know alternatives that will ship to SA then glad to hear them??

I am sorry one of our people vexed you. Hopefully time, and our obvious concern, will enable a rapprochement in the near future.

So all this talk of duties vs. VAT is confusing me. I am obviously one of "those people" that confuse the two.

I've bought a lens from B&H in the past. When it arrived via UPS, I went to collect from their offices (as I couldn't wait another day). They made me pay them what amounted to 10% of the value of the lens. Was this VAT or customs duty?

I am about to place an order for a lens + vertical grip. Will there be different taxes applied to these two items? In my head, I've been adding 10% for "customs" to calculate my total damage. Sounds like I might be in for another duty/tax. :(

Any help / advice appreciated.

That 10% was duties.

Value on invoice(excluding shipping)*1.1*1.14=Total cost to you.

Plus a small handling fee, R25-R100 and 14% vat on top of that.

Except there are no duties on lenses, only vat and the usual handling fees.

There will be VAT payable on the lens and VAT+Duties on the grip.

Thanks bwana. So customs are smart enough to charge customs separately on the items, even though they are going to be on the same invoice? I'd hate to be nailed 10% extra on the lens just because I threw in the grip!

The Rand/Dollar is looking great right now, seems like a great time to buy.

ODP

lol @ bwana, yea in the box is a 5DmkII at reduced price + free 16Gb Extreme IV Memory Stick and Lowepro AW170 Bag.
2 x Hoya Filters : CPL and a 9 Stop Neutral Density
17-40mm and 70-200 non IS Lens
430EXII Flash
RC1 Remote
and a Sony Bloggie Camera for the wife.

With apologies to Mr Henry Posner and B&H

Dude -- do yourself a favour forget about all this overseas ordering and tax man and customs and SA Gov etc etc

Go look in the Outdoor Photo CLASSIFIEDS

With some patience you will find there ANYTHING you ever wanted ( and at a price you can afford)

( disclaimer -- I am still looking for a matte grid focussing screen for my Canon 5D MKI )

Over the years I have purchased ALL my stuff there -- without hassles -- just look for the big time posters ads -- good bunch of people there.

( Who have a lot of money and purchase from B&H -- and then decide they want the latest "toy" or get tired of the camera that will JUST NOT take decent shots :wtf::D )

Then perhaps you are one of those types that only wants BRAND NEW out the box

( You need to go to schul more often :) )

New overseas vs Used locally at similar prices? I'll take new thanks.
Prime example first listing on ODP's lens list CANON ZOOM LENS EF 70-200 mm L IS USM http://tinyurl.com/243n2rd R18,000.00 vs R16589.66 shipped from B&H with applicable duties and a worldwide warranty.

You can always hope so. :o

I agree
but
The price difference is often BIG -- come and look at my 5D and tell me if it looks any different to a brand new one -- or works any differently.
Distressed sellers are a cautious buyers best friend. :erm:
You are from the big apple -- you should understand "dog-eat-dog" :D

PS; You often get the original box as well -- you can wrap it all up -- and STILL spoil yourself with that opening "RUSH" ( with really new stuff a treat more expensive than "happy-powder" :D )

PSS;

That is an abnormal price -- I did say PATIENCE  -- the temple has been rebuilt more than once :)

DAMN THIS THREAD! I'm totally paranoid now, about customs charging 10% duty on the whole order, instead of just on the grip. That would screw me royally.

It won't happen. They go over the invoice and you'll see each item listed separately on the documentation you get from the post office/courier.

Thank you, that puts my mind at ease somewhat...

Reckon I'm gonna go ahead then... Will keep you chaps posted here with how I go.

Yeah, don't fret about it, what are the odds SA customs could ever make a mistake . . . :D

Lol.....

I'm guessing that marking it as a "gift" on the checkout page isn't going to fool anyone at customs, right?
