B&H Photo Video Purchasing Limit?

All is ordered and now just waiting.

Changed the 9stop filter to a 10stop B+W Filter. Cannot wait to do some extreme long exposures in the day.
Did you get the f/2.8 70-200?

I got my new flash the other day from B&H (I went the less complicated - mom, dont you want to walk down to B&H and pick me up a . . . route) and am loving it. Totally different feel than the sigma but they surprisingly really well together.

Unfortunately budget was a bit stretched, so I only went with the F4.

Now I will start saving for the 2.8. :-) or maybe a 100-400 because I am going to need a bit of reach now.

Dont worry about the f4 its one of my favourite lenses.

I wonder if Henry can tell me if there is a wish list for used goods?

Not yet. We keep saying we'll bump the priority for that and then other stuff keeps creeping in. it's a worthy idea and this will give me impetus to nudge it again. BTW, thanks to all here for the gracious welcome.

Oh well - worth a shot :) In the mean time I'll keep checking the site for that used Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS I've been holding out for.

Great having you here. Been a big fan of B&H for a long time now. Before the internet came along I used to have to take the 1/9 almost all the way down to get to you, now you're delivering to me halfway around the globe :D

Just a update from the importing of goods. This is the documentation from UPS in regards to goods imported below a value of R20 000

In respect of private importers, only 3 consignments, imported for non-commercial purposes with a value not exceeding ZAR20 000.00 per consignment is permitted to be imported per calendar year without the importer having to register with customs. A signed declaration to this effect is required of the importer to substantiate this claim. Should the importer exceed any one of these thresholds, the importer is compelled to make an application to the Dept. of Customs & Excise for a customs code number failing which customs reserves the right to impose a penalty for the contravention of the Act and detain any current and future imports until such registration requirements are complied with.

All costs, including penalties, fines, storage, etc. that is incurred as a result of the non-compliance of this legislation will be for the account of the importer, Note that customs reserves the right to call for documentary proof of the importer’s physical address. This will be communicated to you if applicable. The costs listed above do not include any Customs duty (based on the commodity) and VAT Duty (at 14% of VAT Value) and our clearing fee (of 4% Minimum ZAR100.00) which is duly payable by the importer.

Just use a different courier or send the stuff to your wife or brother etc. Way to much red tape in this country.

Update: They just delivered the 17-40mm, 70-200F4, 2 x Filters, 2 x Memory cards and a Sony Bloggie Camera.

the funny thing is that I also bought a Canon RC1 Remote was was in a separate box and shipment with its own tracking number but
that gets delivered by a different agent from UPS later today. Why did they not just pack it in with the other stuff? It is so small???

Now just waiting for the delivery of the Camera body hopefully today or tomorrow.

Nice. :) They should have sent the Bloggie camera separately so you could record an unboxing vid . . . :D

LOL

** Update: The first box was delivered with RAM couriers as UPS is not in my area.

The second box (as big as a match box) was delivered by Speed Services

and now I am waiting for the third that is being delivered by Berco Express.

Thanks. I have to confess I came upon this via a google alert or something similar. Nonetheless I;m happy to help anywhere I am able.

Wow, this is excellent. Good service. It will encourage many more to order from B&H from South Africa. My last order went t very well and I saved a bucket load compared to the local crowds.

I would really like to know if after shipping, duties, vat, clearing and any other fees how much was really saved on items purchased with no local warranty and if it was worth the hassles of buying overseas direct?

Definately worth it. I purchased a 70-200 2.8IS and ended paying R16500 including shipping and import duties (cost was around R14500). At the time SA prices were over R20k.

There shouldn't have been any duties on glass surely?

Shipping and VAT would easily come to R2000. You pay VAT on everything, even glass.
I know - I regularly import goods from B&H but if he was charged duty on a lens as he said then something was amiss.

Sure, but some people confuse VAT and Customs Duty. And why not, it's all just taxes !!!
