BAA here I come (or I hope so!)

I've finally sent a e-mail into my boss letting him know that I want to do a BAA course part-time.

Hopefully he'll accomodate me on the 16 Saturday's that I'll need "off"

If all goes according to plan and such, I'll do the BAA, pass it and then volunteer for Netcare 911 :)

Having said that, my GF will be doing the course full time, so hopefully she'll help me cause I probably will need it.

Its really cool course to do - I did it... ag, many years ago (eish, 15+ I think)... It was called BAC back then. I volunteered with the regional services council aka state ambulance service - fun.

Friday nights were the best - usually code 2's (assault) and maternity cases. With all the drinking, you end up doing a round through the squatter camps and townships picking up one stab victim after another with the heavily pregnant women in between. Sometimes we would end up with 4 in the van before going to the hospital.

The ones that sucked were the many cases where people just wanted a lift into town, so call an ambulance and claim they are dying... you drop them off at casualty and 20 mins later when you drop off the next one, they are nowhere to be seen.

The cases I hated the most were child abuse - we had a 4 year old girl with a green stick fracture of her femur that required surgery because of the splinters... her dad beat her and her mom with a plank. We caught him too and kept him till the cops arrived.
I also hated the really bad ones - one guy had his leg cut almost in half at the thigh and had to wait his turn to see a doc in the hospital passage. Every time he tried to sit up, his leg would separate... Another guy got hit by a truck and had to be put on a stretcher and harnessed cos he was having convulsions and couldn't be seen to yet - he died on the stretcher.

Despite all the bad stuff, it's a real eye opener and awesome to get your feet solidly on the ground and not taking things for granted...

So kudos and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Caught up with a mate who had just completed his BAA and is on the road with ER24.

Heard some awesome and damn near freaky stuff last night over drinks :)

I'd actually been chatting to another buddy while camping this weekend about doing some first aid courses. His a fireman and recommended St.Johns.

I've just got to find time for it.
But I reckon it's knowledge that couldn't go to waste, so will get around to it - hopefully soon.

Yeah - thing about St Johns - is it the same course? Are you allowed to operate with the regular services after their course?

Mine cost R70 and I paid for it myself at the time - peanuts and well worth it. You get to do mouth to mouth with a plastic chick... not much different to any other hollywood star :p
 
ST Johns - I've heard some 'interesting' stories, they also only offer the course FULL TIME which doesn't work out for me.

Ambutek - I've also heard some interesting stories about them, but more good than bad (can't say the same for St Johns)

Either way, I sent the e-mail to my boss last night, he has said nothing, but either way, I'm registering soon! :D

My boss has said I can do the course, he isn't too happy about it (because of the Saturday's messing with work - generally) but I can do the course.

YAY'ness!
 
For those in Cape Town who are keen to do the BAA course before it is cancelled (± 2 years time) please note that Ambutek have limited space left for courses starting next year.

Part time is almost full and full time is getting there.

R6000 (50% deposit to register for the class) full time, 5 weeks.
R6500 (50% deposit to register for the class) part time starting in May 2010 for 16 weeks.

Why are they canceling the courses?
