Have you guys ever felt that gaming companies should go back to basics with regards to games?

I struggle to find games these days that keep my attention for long.

Something simple like these games would probably keep me entertained for a long time;

Zombie Driver

LucasArts and it's soon arriving "Lucidity"

thoughts?

A but you see since the pirates, copied all the games the small guys that usually do this sort of "basic" gaming development has started to dry up. Now its all about making money and pushing franchise's and what not.

To be honest, I still play a little Super Mario on the odd occasion:o as well as some Playstation 1 games. It's not that I don't like new games, sometimes they are a bit verbose. I'd love to see a return to basics

I agree. Im not sure its age or the games.

When I was younger, I would lock myself up and play a game like C&C for days.

Now, I play for about a 2 - 3 days and get bored. When it comes to online gaming, that tends to grasp my attention a little longer. I get bored with single player.

I havent played a single player game in years... Storyline and gameplay seem to be a thing of the past... now its all about multiplayer to me.

i hate new games with their loading times and lack of immersion

Maybe it's You? growing up?

Yeah, I remember a few years back I'd be busy with a game for a few months, nowadays I just rush to finish it as soon as possible so I can get to the next big title and rush through that to. Games like Braid and Lucidity should come around a lot more often.

I miss the quirky strategy and RPG's of yore. Back in the day anyone could get a few knowledgable people together and knock out something creative and new. Now you need 40 million dollars and 300 people.

I love playing Unreal Tournament 1999

Yesterday i found Unreal Anthology - 1 disc for R99
Unreal - the original 98/99
Unreal Tournament
Unreal II the Awakening
Unreal Tournament 2004

I remember being awed by the graphics on the original Unreal and its great to be able to play it again - graphics are not so wow anymore but nice to see how things have progressed forward.

it's like how i got excited about next gen and all the hype, now its just normal, another game with nice graphics, i think the importance of wow graphics have left the need for a immersive game far behind/

LOL!!! well lets face it... the gameplay is alot more boring cause most companies are focusing on using next gen technology so they hammering all the gfx etc etc... only company to pull that off so far is square enix and Square soft a while ago.. anyway

Diablo 3 is prob the only single player game im looking forward to

This is a "single player" thread, but one game I really enjoyed recently was Demigod. No real storyline to speak of, very simple gameplay... and tons of fun. Especially multiplayer. Since story seems to be relegated to absolute minimal priority for pretty much every developer, gameplay wins now.

Played some Diablo I recently... and was shocked by how *hard* it was. Amazingly enough, despite all of the multitasking capability that current games require, they're actually much easier.

I miss when studios like Black Isle were making really engaging games. :(

You think Diablo III will be SP focussed? I have doubts.

As 'net access grew more and more common, the updates to Diablo II reflected Blizzard's shift to prioritise Battle.net play. To the point where, with some characters, it is near impossible to solo the game in SP when you have the later updates installed. Not to mention all of the ladder-based stuff they added, which was locked for SP characters.

If the focus in d3 is on mp i rly will be sad. D2 has one of the most engaging sp experiences, i just keep coming back :) but for me the only franchise thats been able to consistently keep me interested in sp is half-life. Other than that i only play mp these days, its sad rly.

Same here - Red Alert 1 was awesome, I actually tried to install it yesterday :D

What about the jews and the aliens too hey CrzWaco? :D:D:D

One of my favourite games that I find myself playing while waiting for someone / somewhere to go etc. or when you don't feel like launching big games with daunting questlines is this one:

Elastomania (ELMA)

Where you have to navigate your very flexible motoX bike around obstacles to collect items before finishing the course. It's addictive as all hell!

If anyone wants it, I have the 5MB game file hosted on my site.
