I am a newbie to iPad and Apple.
Is there a guide which I can follow, which will explain from scratch, how to backup iOS 5 on my iPad 2, incase iOS 6 gives me problems so that I can go back to iOS 5?
Any advice please? I dont know what an SHSH is.
I tried tinyumbrella, but dont know what I should to to backup the iPad with it

Not doable without your blobs.

At best you able to save your blobs for 5.1.1 using TU but if you install 6.0.1 you need both blobs for 4.x.xx and 5.x.xx to downgrade.

If you can save your blobs for 5.1.1 what it does mean is if you should ever need to do a re-install on your iPad2 you could re-install 5.1.1. Without your blobs/shsh saved if you need to do a re-install now, for whatever reason, you compelled to use the latest firmware, 6.0.2.

yes, haven't done the upgrade yet, so I can still get the blobs
do you use tinyumbrella to backup the blobs? How big will the blob be?

You can, they tiny, that's why you fetch them using Tiny Umbrella :p About 7000 bytes.

You can use Tiny Umbrella or Redsn0w yeah.

Has the iPad ever been jailbroken?

great stuff thanks, i think i could have actually backed up something by accident
not been jailbroken before , would that be a good thing?

Nope. Not good. Jailbroken devices sometimes have blobs saved to the Cydia servers.

An SHSH blob (short for Signature HaSH, blob simply referring to a blob of data) is basically a digital signature that the Apple Server uses to approve a restore process for iOS devices such as the iPad.

You won't be able to save anything other than blobs for 6.0.1 at this stage. While Apple is still signing a particular firmware version you would connect your iDevice to pc/mac, run TU and save the blobs.

When Apple stops signing those firmware versions the ability to save those blobs stops too.

If you're not missing anything from iOS 6 or having issues with 5.1.1 then I would personally wait for 6.1. Rumours suggest we may see a JB for 6.1 as well (time will tell).
