Hi all,

I have a question, or a serious concern I want to mention to you guys.

I'm sitting in a bit of a situation here.

Our 1 server is giving us problems and is going to die anytime soon, we had such a hectic deadline last week with the server being down and me struggling to get it working, but long story short, after spending about 5 hours on the server, it just came right, I have no idea what I did but long story short, it started working.

This obviously shows that the PC will die very soon.

I've stressing right now, I'm very worried because I've done what I can to get a new server, but because the new server is 'not in the budget' they have to have a meeting Monday and discuss it.

I'm very worried, if our server dies today, or this weekend, or Monday even, hell, must not die on Tuesday, we are so screwed.

My question/concern to YOU guys is, do any of you have that 1 server, that if crashes, will be a complete disaster to your business.

What will you do?
Do you have plans in place?

We don't!
Seriously! If the server didn't come up (by itself I might add) then I don't know what will have happened.

I'd like to hear your thoughts etc so that maybe I can come up with some sort of plan for my company because right now, I'm really worried.

ALWAYS have a backup system running. For small businesses, I would recommend like a big external hdd, and when Eskom is at its best, get a very good quality UPS!

Larger companies should have RAID controllers apart from stand alone servers, so that if the server crashes, just plug in a new system, and of you go again...

Thats only my personal perspective of how the things should work...

I have a scheduled weekly backup for every computer on my network with Acronis True Image. I can't believe they don't even have that!

Wherever there is a large ammount of data, there MUST be a backup. Believe me. . . ! If something fails, then the IT guy is always first to blame. So IT people, cover yourselves, and created an effective backup solution for the company you are working for...!

Alot of Businesses don't want to spend extra on Backup devices, they think they can do without it. The only time they realise that that it's necessary is when something happens to the server/data and have no backup.
