Have no experience with backup hardware but now have the need for some decent and easy to use software for backing up over a network. Could anyone help on advising some software i could look into?

A bit more info would be helpful. How many devices do you need to back up, what OS(s) are you using, where are you backing up to and what is the size and nature of your data? Do you have a budget for commercial software or do you need something free?

something that can run on windows xp/7/8 and I want to backup from two of my desktop pc's to a hd connected to the network size of data is less than between 2g to about 10g on average and budget wise, would be nice to have free software but if its worth paying for and does the job then i'm willing to pay for it donno what a good price is for this kind of software so i'm gonna let you decide what a good price is.

Try Areca backup http://www.areca-backup.org/ which is free open source.

I've also used the Toucan portable app for various backup and sync activities but you have to set up a Windows task and simple .bat script if you want to schedule backups/syncs

Commercial solutions Symantec System Recovery and Paragon Drive Backup are pretty good.

If you dont want it automated and all the files to backup are within one or two folders then a network shared drive.

copy files from C: to Z: (the other drive on the network)
