Bad Driving thread

Ja, noticed that odd anomaly.

GPS showed 100km/h, but I'm cruisin' at 120km/h...

BTW how accurate are the speeds from your GPS unit?

Not accurate at all. USA built random code generator into GPS satelite array so that no one could use GPS guided weapons with pin point accuracy against them.

Everyone assumes GPS is accurate but it is so far from being usable I just laugh at people saying they used the GPS to measure car speed.

GPS Speed reading are far more accurate, unless you have bad signal from my experience.

Precision Limits
GPS units will report driving speeds with errors down to about 0.1 to 0.5 MPH. GPS units have a maximum reported speed of 999 MPH -- a few models that are no longer on the market had a limit of 90 MPH for recorded speeds. Commerce Department regulations on self-guided missile technology keep GPS receivers from reporting speeds greater than 999 MPH, or altitudes in excess of 60,000 feet. As this is higher than Mount Everest, and nearly 20,000 feet higher than airline cruise altitudes, you won't see it on your typical commute.

Also the industry standard for performance testing is the Racelogic Vbox series, they use GPS. From memory it is a 20Hz GPS device so it gives faster updates for measuring acceleration but the accuracy of speed is the same.

And then just from my personal experience of using multiple iPhone and Android Phone based GPS navigation and a couple of Garmin units I know they are perfectly accurate. You can very quickly pick up if they have bad signal and it rarely happens.

Best example would be driving through Bloemfontein with my father, he set the cruise control to 132 on the gps to do an experiment. Get pulled over by the cops doing exactly 132.

Not quite. This was called Selective Availability (SA) and was switched off permanently on May 2, 2000. The newer GPS III satellites do not even have SA functionality.

LHD is kicking in (lazy holiday driving) Nearly got driven into by a lady crossing an intersection (she's got to stop while I've got open road). She even looked right at me twice before crossing but for whatever reason she didn't actually register that I was there. One of the closer calls I've had in a while

Glad you escaped that one! People drive like pigs around this time of the year because their minds are elsewhere and not on the road where it should be :(

What exactly is that image supposed to show?

What I think he's trying to say, is that High Accuracy is an item closest to target and high precision is the repeated\consistency of that. Very difficult to prove as the "precision" or frequency of readings in this case takes place against a moving vehicle.

Both are inaccurate but iirc GPS is more accurate since 'less' factors can affect it.
Cars speedo will report speed higher than actual (built in to make you think you going fast :D) and can be affected by factors like tire pressure, wheel size temperature etc
GPS are prone to under report speed when going uphill and signal quality from the satellites so in a tunnel wont work or mountainous area signal may bounce a little etc

This.. You can usually spot this easily and after driving with gps tracking I kinda know what the real speed is vs speedometer so on up hills trust that as gps under reports on hills and Bermuda triangles (Midrand n1 has one, radio dead zones for gps(brief) or cellular)

Was behind this guy yesterday, kept speeding up and slowing down and couldn't drive in a straight line, kept going from side to side even into the oncoming traffic a few times.

This lady was sitting right on my back even though I was driving just over the limit and stayed there, didn't want to overtake. Got to the point where I had to move over so much going into the rough for her to race past me. CAW83467

Single lane road?

If so, I would not have moved over for all the tea in china, and I would have dropped to 10% below the speed limit.

Yeah, you can see the road in the background of the 1st pick and the 'brush' I had to move into.

And tap your brakes suddenly just light enough to make them light up to give them a skrik.

I hate tailgaters with a passion, and I also go intentionally slower if they do it to me

Rear fog light works better.
