I have always (for the past 10 years) had a very good SNR of around 28 downstream and sync speed of 4Mbps. This evening the line went dead for a short while and when it came back up I have a SNR of only 6 and my sync speed is 2Mbps.

WTF happened? Think Telkom messed something up??

Same here. Different trench/suburb/province, same issue. Old water main burst down the road, 4Mbps with 15dB noise margin went to sub-2 Mbps with 6dB margin and unstable. Here's hoping it dries out soon...

Still not working

Thanks guys
Funny thing is whilst I am speaking to telkom on the phone, the noise margin is fine. Soon as I put the phone down or even unplug the phone the noise margin goes down and then it drops the connection....

dadiggle, I'm still using a Telkom 5100 ADSL modem and its working perfectly well, so there's nothing wrong with using an ancient modem.

An update on my (different) situation: Telkom came on site (duh!) to see if it was my microfilter, my router, my handset. This despite their own techs being able to see problems at the exchange end. Next, we got a call to say that they were aware of issues with a DSLAM pod (?) at the Bryanston exchange, and would swap it out, but meanwhile would move us to a new DSLAM. That was yesterday.
Today we have 1632k down, with 58dB attenuation and 9dB noise margin. It's relatively stable like that - just a whole lot worse than it was a week ago. Telkom sent their second "it's fixed now" sms, which I again rejected, with stats.
No word about line quality... Oh, and in the interim, Bryanston has had two more water main bursts...

In closing (touch wood)... After Telkom sent their 'it's fixed' sms, the line finally failed completely - no dial tone, nada. So now I had to open a new case, because the old one had been closed. 48 hours later, and the problem was identified as a cable fault, and fixed. Back to 15dB noise margin at 4096bps!

so it was a line fault or something. Telkom came out and fixed it. I don't have my 28 noise margin back, but at least a steady 13. Better than nothing...
