Bafana Bafana draw

The only initiative I have seen is raising money to give under privliged children soccer balls.

It's like giving someone a car but not telling them how to drive it. Why aren't they also setting up training camps (unless they are and I don't know about it) and teaching players the timing they so desperately lack?

Sure they're good. I mean play one bounce with them and they've got all the skills and tricks, but come match time and they're trying to dribble through the entire teams themselves.

Also street football is all about individual skill and not team work which is why our team falls on it's face.

its all in the name

yep! they need to change that crappy name - it is like a pro boxer having a name like "glass jaw" - mentally lives up to it. I don't who gave who the authority to name SA soccer teams but bafana banana & amaglugglug is much to live by!:D

dude, that's the name of the academy:D
The name might be conveying an aspiration rather than the current state.

We have also won a WC at under 12 level if I'm not mistaken.
That just shows that the talent is there at an early age but the local league is such crap you can't expect anything good to come out of it.

I never meant you and I have different views ont he word, I meant myself and the academy do.

WRT the Danone Under 12 World Championships - we won it a year or two ago (not certain) and there was a story somewhere where the players didn't receive anything from SAFA. A promising prospect from that team (who is at Arsenal btw) said that no one congratulated them officially, no one tried to keep them in SA, they still don't have any opportunities to improve in SA and that si why they are moving abroad.

Simple - we can't educate footballers from a young enough age. I mean the fact that they went in search of talent that was 17-19 years old is an absolute joke. The structures in place are atrocious and we don't even deserve the current FIFA ranking. The only reason SA are not a complete failure is because the players have skills - they just don't use them properly.

You would think that the likes of Cameroon and Nigeria have a far inferior football infrastructure as compared to South Africa yet they continue to have high quality players. I think South Africa is going through a phase where there is a lack of quality/talent and no matter how good your infrastructure is, it's not the only factor contributing to the existing situation. Some countries are blessed with talent, we're unfortunately not at the moment. England are actually going through a similar problem at the moment. It's probably not that evident now but maybe in 4 or 5 years time it will be.

Mate - Nigeria have an amazing system in place for bringing talent to the fore. As do Ghana. Cameroon I think got lucky though:)

The fact is that SA do not have proper talent identification and talent shaping systems in place. Plain and simple. Ask yourself why it is so easy for foreigners to identify youth talent in Nigeria and Ghana than it is in SA... means they have matches to watch and places to find players.

Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that soccer is a truly global sport, and that rugby and cricket are sports played by a much much smaller number of countries? Or that our local administrators are useless? Or that our players are not committed to the national team because of the far greater rewards they can earn playing for European clubs? etc etc

Our cricket and rugby administrators are rubbish too, cricketers and rugby players have the same temptation of earning big money in England and Europe as well.

True - but the systems in place to identify and hone talent is MUCH better.

Well you don't have racial discrimination in soccer here unlike cricket and rugby

Sure - but I think that the disparity between what a cricket/rugby player could earn in Europe and can earn here is much, much less than the temptation offered to local footballers.

Hey guys just saw this on the Sowetan Website. I don't know how true this is as there was not verification from the players themselves.
Pienaar, Mokoena reject new deal
15 June 2009
Sello Rabothata and Ramatsiyi Moholoa

THREE senior Bafana Bafana players have not signed the improved contracts offered to them by the South African Football Association for the Confederations Cup.

The trio, according to sources to the Bafana Bafana camp, are captain Aaron “Mbazo” Mokoena, Steven “Schillo” Pienaar and Macbeth Sibaya.

The 23-member squad were given new contracts by team manager Sipho Nkumane last Wednesday night. It states that they will receive R90 000 each for a win.

In terms of the previous contract, each player received R60 000 for a win.

The entire team threatened to boycott the Confederations Cup last week demanding a total of R34 million in bonuses for winning this tournament.

Safa receive R96 million yearly from Absa and Castle Lager sponsorship. The association has offered the team a bonus of R14 million to share should they win the event.

Safa chief executive officer Raymond Hack said he was not aware if there was any player who did not sign the improved contracts.

“It’s for the first time that I hear that there are players who did not sign contracts, but that’s nothing because they have represented the association and country (against Iraq).

“I addressed the players earlier on this morning {yesterday}, Dr Khoza {Irvin, chairman of the organising committee} also spoke to them. “There is not a single player who complained about anything. We wish them all the best and are confident they will make the country proud.”

Hack also poured cold water over allegations that the three players who did not sign new contracts were not given tickets for yesterday’s opening match against Iraq.

Some of the players had to ask for tickets for their wives, girlfriends and relatives for the Iraqi game.

“That is not true at all, the players got everything that they asked for. Sipho (Nkumane) fetched the tickets, in terms of their requests, from me on Wednesday,” said Hack.

Nkumane, Mokoena, Sibaya and Pienaar could not be reached for comment regarding the improved contract and tickets at the time of going to press last night.

A source close to the players said: “It is true the three guys did not sign the contracts but showed their love for South Africa by playing against Iraq.”
These are the players that play in the super rich leagues of Europe. They obviously feel that the money offered by SAFA is an insult compared to what they earn overseas.
All I can say is that these guys are not even contracted to play for the country. They are basically playing for free at the moment.
SAFA is a joke of an organisation. Cosatu and the SACP must call for their disbanding with immidiate effect.

How much do you think Pienaar earns a week? 30 000 pounds? Thats R390 000 a week. And Bennie? 50 000 pounds? R650 000 a week.

...and R650K is reported to have been offered to each player for winning the tournament. It must sound like a big joke to big earners like Pienaar.

Perhaps. Remember most our local footballers would struggle to get a decent contract at a second tier European club at best

Do the English FA pay their players for representing their country? When playing for your country money should be the last thing on your mind

I doubt either of those figures are even close to correct. Pienaar at best 20 000 and Benni 30 000 IMO

I still dont believe how they can think about money? Its for the pride of the entire frikin nation but yet they all in it for the money?
If it is like that bafana can go ,.!., because that is not the way the sport should be played. Especially since we holding confed cup and the world cup... pathetic.

The big question is if the players aren't getting the money then who is pocketing it?

Safa receive R96 million yearly from Absa and Castle Lager sponsorship.

This exclude the gate takings and TV rights money.

As far as I can see, we have very greedy administrators and the players must feel that they are being cheated big time.

The football players also have families to feed. They shouldn't be treated like pet monkeys i.e. entertain and get a peanut each as a reward. In the meantime Molefe Olifant's waist is expanding from all the sponsorship money.

Did you know that the administrators that were involved in the ABSA deal for the PSL were awarded R20 million each for securing that deal?
That's insane money for people who just attended meetings and probably never even kicked a football in their lives. What is more nauseating is that local corporates were queing up to sponsor the PSL. It's not like the PSL would have battled to find a sponsor.

I think you are confusing the PSL and SAFA, two different bodies, with different revenue streams.

You quoted a figure of 96 Million earlier in the thread, now if you take that money and consider they run national teams for all age groups, and both sexes, staff for those teams, SAFA staff, etc. The money does not look like it goes a long way.

The PSL is a different money making machine alltogether. And what do you have against commission? The team went and secured that deal, i.e they had to show Supersport, ABSA, Nedbank, etc, the value of the PSL. And they deserve that money IMO. Its sales, no deal means no comm.
