This is not a Open Source vs the devil argument, if it is against the law then ALL software will suffer a similar fate.

I can see how it will go with open source projects:

We the courts have ruled that open source projects will be blocked from selling thei- ...oh wait. OK so we can't block the sale of the product because there is no sale of the product. Fine. Then we will prevent the source from being distributed an- ...what?...the code is already out there on the interwebs?!? Well I'm stumped, the court will take a brief recess during which I intend to stick my head in the paper shredder.

Wikipedia said:
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law that implements two 1996 treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures (commonly known as Digital Rights Management or DRM) that control access to copyrighted works. It also criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright itself. In addition, the DMCA heightens the penalties for copyright infringement on the Internet. Passed on October 12, 1998 by a unanimous vote in the U.S. Senate and signed into law by President Bill Clinton on October 28, 1998, the DMCA amended Title 17 of the United States Code to extend the reach of copyright, while limiting the liability of the providers of on-line services for copyright infringement by their users.

Is it just me or is the bold part beyond all logic? The guy had parkinsons and scribbled down something that was interpreted as that

These people are idiots... look we have want to protect our MULTI BILLION dollar entertainment industry from going bankrupt. Anyone seen any homeless actors?

Banning Copy Software will just force it underground, and it will continue to thrive. In the digital age, Piracy is unstoppable! Good luck to them!

Heh, they the eponymous "we the people" allowed to come into being the DMCA, the thing that criminalises the act of circumventing, even if doing so is achievable by falling off a log. Them dumbasses truly deserve the results of their 'labors' here!

NO

America is the home of the idiot.
"This is a victory for the creators and producers of motion pictures and television shows and for the rule of law in our digital economy,"
Motion Picture Association of America chairman-->Dan Glickman<--said.

mLord I rest my case.

NOT idiots -- zombie robot consumers

If I'm getting the story right, this device takes a media stream, dumps it to PVR and then burns it to regular DVD without copy protection?

I'm so sick of digital rights issues. A few high-profile prosecutions isn't a strategy to build your business. Get with the 21st century, media owners. Nobody's playing by the rules anymore, so time to revolutionize the way you do things.

I agree with earlier poster. If you're running after the guy who pays for software, you've got the wrong guy. There's something illogical about the way media companies are countering piracy, and it's starting to smell a bit fishy to me.

Slightly OT, but my personal favourite irony re DRM was the Bill Gates TechCrunch interview.

Ban? Am I missing something? Isn't this only a preliminary injunction?

Think back a couple of years when libdvdread was first released. It, and all similar projects including vlc, was ruled to be in violation of the copy protection laws of the US. ALL those projects had to find new homes in Europe.

They cannot stop the spreading of the product, true, but they can make it an irritation for the developers to maintain the code and if the MPAA gets their way they can start "censoring" out those evil programs.

BS

what about homemade DVD?

why I cannot duplicate my family / my wedding / my etc.... DVDs ?

You can. Your own DVDs are not CSS encrypted and they don't want to allow programs which break that encryption. You may rip your DVD manually using Nero Recode if your dvd is not CSS encrypted.

No surprise this comes out of a Republican conservative state.

Yet it was conveniently signed into law by Bill Clinton a DEMOCRATIC president.

You do know that the Hollywood is left - and sides mostly with the Democrats.
Most of the MPAA are left wingers.

You need a lesson in politics. Republicans actually defend civil liberties. Obama in fact has not repealed any of Bush' laws and in fact entrenched them more. Bush was responding to 911, Obama had no 911.

LOL.

America is the home of the idiot.

Come on Wiz. If they were 'idiots' you wouldn't care what they say, they would be inconsequential. As is, their movies are the stuff many of your news group customers download. Please remove the hypocrisy. They may be idiots for you but they yield more power - not just in terms of their army but in terms of entertainment output and culture - everyone wants to be American. Arabs love American products and movies, Japanese are now talking like the Sgt in Full Metal Jacket (latest fad there) and Europe is high on US blockbusters.

not idiot but Idiots

Buuut, you want their Hollywood schlock so much. I mean who downloads Hollywood movies eh?

I only go for art house, indie and anime cinema. I don't call the Yanks stupid though. If they're so stupid let SA make Star Trek or Batman or some other CGI-action fest that ppl love so much, ne?

I haven't knowingly used any RealNetworks product in years, so there really doesn't make any difference to me. In any case, I never thought of using one of their products when copying DVDs.

As someone said, there are a million other applications that can do the job, RealNetworks do not have exclusivity there.

Exactly. You can ban a book, but no one can ban an idea (well, at least not ban it so it sticks).
