DVD copying software ban

A US judge has blocked RealNetworks from selling DVD copying software that film studios fear could be used as a tool by pirates to create bootleg copies of films.

say what?

I especially love the logic here

"While it may be fair use for an individual consumer to store a backup copy of a personally-owned DVD on that individual's computer, a federal law has nonetheless made it illegal to manufacture or traffic in a device or tool that permits a consumer to make such copies," Patel wrote.

That is like banning socks because someone might use it to suffocate someone.

You can, thousands of programs to do it on the net :D

it is BS

why don't the judge just ban "0" in the binary range, that teach these gawd damn pirates! see if they can copy things then!

but, this will only lead so some pssed off programmer, which will develop an even better piece of software, just to stick it to the man!

I call for a ban to be placed on all copies of Windows Operating Systems because pirates might be using this to create bootleg copies of films AND Arab terrorists might be using it to compile their beheading videos AND Somali hijackers might be using it to compile their videos in which they demand ransoms for ships.

Time to ban pens, DVD Readers and Computers. And VHS VCR that can record from DVD? Camcorders? Even NERO?

Let's just ban computers then. And typewriters. And pens. And paper.

Hell ... let's just ban everything except sitting under trees and vegetating.

America is the home of the idiot.

My word, and most of them are in positions of power it seems. I mean, W.T.F. is the point of this:

"While it may be fair use for an individual consumer to store a backup copy of a personally-owned DVD on that individual's computer, a federal law has nonetheless made it illegal to manufacture or traffic in a device or tool that permits a consumer to make such copies," Patel wrote.

So, you MAY make a backup copy of your DVD, but you MAY NOT buy a tool to do it? Isn't that just the stupidest thing you've heard all day?

OpenSource FTW

The last bastion of common sense.
This is not a Open Source vs the devil argument, if it is against the law then ALL software will suffer a similar fate.

There will be a giant exodus of source code and websites out of the US because of this, every single project that has this feature will need to be hosted somewhere other than the US.

I hear Sweden is on a roll?

Let's ban stupid people. I'm actually quite gobsmacked. The irony is that the people who were willing to pay for RealDVD were probably people who were willing to pay for content anyway. Someone who was going to use RealDVD to pirate was probably going to get the pirated/hacked/cracked version of it anyway. Or just something free. OMG, I want to laugh so hard my spleen will explode. Or cry. I don't know which.

I love how the judge was being clever with her "vegas" remarks. Maybe she wants a job in the entertainment business.
